I know the dealio but you wouldn't be able to get the clarity, colour, sharpness or depth of field like this* from a coolpix point and shoot [editline]20th April 2014[/editline] photo ©Andrew Perry™
I was kidding, oh my god. Also, Trog, your selfies are really good though. I don't mean do selfies only (your photography is great in general, always like seeing your posts), just saying don't be put off if some people don't like them or get bored of them.
After years of going to the woods all it took was the post office a couple of blocks away from my house to find what I actually have been looking for all this time... geometry and colors. This is what happens when you start paying attention to what you actually want to do instead of going out hoping to get something. Thanks to The Salmon and this thread for helping me realize all this, I thought there was nothing to shoot around here while it actually is full of stuff if you go looking for it, the results may not be there yet but at least it was much more fun to go around and shoot. First time at this sort of edit, I know it's not perfect, can someone give me some tips? Assuming you know the look I'm going for. I don't know what kind of look you are looking for, but personally I really like the colors/tones.
i think the highlights are over-blown a bit
most of these shots are underexposed to the point of making the images worse, though a few of them do have a lot of potential. especially the orange building photo would be pretty nice if it were more vibrant/bright tbh
Now that you mention it they do look a tad too dark especially the orange building. I do bring them down a bit in post, on my monitor they look alright going towards being a bit dark (which I like) but I can see how they could be too dark on other monitors even though I keep my brightness (on the monitor) pretty low, I will try and re-edit them. EDIT: I updated them with brighter versions.
i think the highlights are over-blown a bit
I think that's just monitor calibration, they look fine to me - no whites. I remember when I was comparing 3D render times at Uni, the result on the Uni computer looked a lot brighter than my laptop. Monitor Differences are the bane of my life.

Does anyone know why my camera would have intermittently decided to stop shooting RAW for a few minutes? Canon 5D 1.

But as said the highlights are blow up/ The colour pallet is really nice and calm, personally I prefer a bit more contrast and saturation but you have to develop your own style so experiment around. If you really want to get better at post processing I suggest start shooting different types of film under various lighting conditions, scan & print them and analyze them. Most fun and effective lessions you can get IMO.
EDIT: I updated them with brighter versions.
Have you ever calibrated your monitor?? If not, you should.

Okay the shadows don't look very harsh but it seems liek you guys are seeing it a lot differently from me.. This could go terribly wrong but could some folk post a phone pic of the picture on their screen so I can get a rough indication of the differences? Also, I'm poor and can't afford to get myself a film camera and film, maybe once I start earning money during the summer I'll look into it. [editline]20th April 2014[/editline] The highlight issue is confusing me especially, for me, there's no detail at all lost in the highlights, they're certainly not blown out.
I just want my other photos to be cool too :(
You're easy on the eyes and people will find your self portraits more interesting because of it. It's not that your other photos aren't as cool, it's that non-critical viewers will gloss over your more cerebral stuff for the photos of your beauty instead. Don't let it sway your art making.

I didn't want my face to be on the same page twice in the pics of yourself page and honestly, this is my favorite self-portrait i've done to date.
