I think a good middle ground would be to not necessarily follow every advice to the letter but maybe simply use them as motivation to improve and try different things or ways of doing things.
That way you don't end up doing what others want and loose what you want to do yet you can improve, at least in theory.
Also I'm aware that it's not a good idea to generalize, I'm sure there will be many cases where other approaches will work much better and it also depends on the person.

I actually live up in Modesto, but I was in the Bay Area for that visit. I'm out there fairly often actually!
its funny, i saw the hotel california sign and thought "hey! oakland!" and posted, but then i saw the top photo and realized that almost anyone could have deduced that it was taken in san francisco.

Yeah those are in Monterrey. They've got some exhibit on jellyfish and octopus right now and it was pretty neato.
transferring the remaining London photos to my big computer, still got a lot to sift through and edit. plus i've got 3 rolls to scan, so stay tuned

I don't know what to say about brightness...they look bright enough to me....my screen may not be calibrated...but I haven't had problems with it in the past... :/
As for focal lengths, I'm a poor college student, so I can only afford the nifty-fifty and vintage lenses (I used a vintage 50mm in these shots). I was kinda hoping people would complement me on the colors because I just learned how to use curves, haah...
