I've just noticed that it's horribly front-focused and I have no idea why I'm always so careful to precisely focus and re-focus if I move or my subject moves even a tiny bit, and yet this happens really often Both of my lenses back-focused when I first got them so I had to use a LOT of AF fine tune until they were exactly right, and then when I go into a different environment and shoot subjects at different distances, it seems to be way off again sometimes but not others, it drives me fucking mad
what are the focus mechanisms, screw driven or silent motor? Silent motor focusing lenses have less tendency to misfocus, but still it can happen. it depends on the zoom setting (if you microadjust it can be off for one focal length but right for another), and whether or not it is coming from infinity focus or close focus. So your lens might focus fine coming from infinity, but not fine when coming from close focus PDAF sucks for critical AF accuracy wide open and at long focal lengths, I tend to use manual focus and magnified on the screen for tele stuff. your best option is just stopping down more so that the back or front focusing is less noticeable.

Since buying it I've pretty much just been shooting birds from 3-8 feet and stopping down to f/7.1 - f/9 more for overall sharpness than depth of field, and it seems pretty accurate in that case. I had to set the AF fine tune to -19 on both lenses, -20 being the furthest you can go, that's what lead me to suspect that there might be a problem with the camera itself. Thanks for the tips, I guess I'll try using manual focus a bit more often with the tele at least. i've shot heaps of photos at 1600ISO before, but for some reason, this was the only one that came out alright and not grainy as all fuck tonight. in other news, i won 80 dollars at the dog races.
what did you use to calibrate the focus? a close object or a far away one? and what zoom setting? I recommend using the longest end of the zoom, as the shorter ends have a deeper DoF so inaccuracies are more masked. make sure also you refocus to either close up or infinity when calibrating focus, as that will be how to achieve perfect focus in the future. If you set it coming from infinity, then focus far from your subject, then focus on them and it should lock in. If you do it the other way, focus on your hand (in front of the lens), then focus on the subject and it should be dialed in AF is harder than it seems haha

I've done it a few times and -19 always seems to be the sharpest yeah you're not kidding, it's a huge pain in the ass guess I'll have another go at it [editline]edited[/editline] other people seem to arrive at -19 with D7000s

I know i've posted a lot of these kind of shots, I hope that they're not getting plane-fully boring. Heuh.
