fyi i havent posted content in ages because my 500Ds sensor has a stuborn speck which makes me not want to use it anymore and just go for analog only these days. going to get myself a 35mm film flatbed scanner real soon though plus I'm getting a Nokia lumia 1020 (the 41 megapickels one) which should be my main snapshot camera for the next couple of years.

I love when the light through the trees is really crisp and so intense in comparison to the shadows that it's overexposed even for your eyes. It's one of my favourite looking things. I like this picture.

Relearning the 50mm. Been so long since I shot on one that I forgot how to make compositions interesting. Still learning the camera and the ups and downs, going to take a bit of time before I feel as though I'm making better images than I was able to before. Going from an all live view camera to an all optical view is quite jarring, bit of a film like experience.

How do these look, and what can I do to get better?[/QUOTE]
First one has potential to be a nice silhouette, maybe try to hold your hand above the front of the lens (just out of sight of the shot) to see if it helps a bit with the flare, although having the sun right in the photo makes it quite hard to avoid flares and depends more on how your camera/film/lens handles it.
The second would have been more intriguing if shot from above the cars but I can see how that was most likely not an option, it would helped to show the mass of cars.
Third one is a bit too contrasty for my taste, a bit harsh if you will in the reflections on the water, the subject though is pretty standard, might have been more spectacular later in the day with the sun nearly below the horizon having long shadows cast from the people on the beach. (you seem to have a bit of dust on the lens or sensor by the way)
The forth one I quite like, especially as a thumbnail, nice colors, I like the light, the haze and the overall atmosphere, maybe I would've shot it a bit tighter and cut the stand in the bottom right corner completely or shot it wider and have it all in.
Fifth is not bad, it's nearly a silhouette yet retains some information which is nice for a change, again I like the colors and atmosphere, I like this one better than the last, I would have maybe cut out, composition wise, the pole on the right or maybe even gone vertical, it's hard to tell no being there when you shot it what could've been done and it's also just a matter of style and preference.
All this is just my opinion of course, I would not take any of if too literally, actually I would strongly suggest to look at others opinions and then mix and match the advice to suit your taste and style, keep at it though!
Just came home from work and snapped this one

I don't know where to post this question, sorry friends.
I am slowly making photography a hobby, but what is throwing me off is exposure triangle. Can someone put shutter speed, iso, and aperture in layman's terms for me? I've looked at the cambridgecolour guide and it won't sink in.
ISO is your sensor's sensivity, apperture is how much light your lens allows trough and shutter speed shouldn't be too hard to figure.
the idea behind exposure triangle is that to create a full exposure you can choose different combination.
for example if my full exposure is:
ISO - 400
Aperture - f/4
Shutter - 1/400
but I want a faster shutter speed because I want to photograph a racing car then I could bump up the ISO to 1600 which is 2 full stops (400 -> 800 -> 1600) and now I can use a faster shutter speed of 1/1600 while keeping a full exposure
Can you show me some pictures with different exposure settings, and how it would look? Every time I try to mess with the settings it comes out looking black or really dark and I don't know what setting is doing that.
well shutter you want to (if you're handheld) keep it over 1/60
if your indoors, keep your f/stop as wide as it can go (f/1.8 or f/4, it depends on the lens)
and if you're indoors again, put the iso up to something like 800
plug these settings in and see where you go from there, if it's white, decrease the iso or increase the shutter speed. if it's dark, increase the iso or decrease the shutter speed
with the shutter, the smaller the number the brighter it is
with the aperture, the smaller the number the brighter it is
with the iso, the larger the number the brighter it is
it might be better to disregard ISO at first and just think about shutter speed and aperture size
your camera's sensor's job is to record the intensity of light, but it can only do so for within a limited range (compared to what exists in the real world) and anything outside that is going to be either completely black (too dark for the sensor) or completely white (too bright for the sensor). thus you have to control what parts of the scene will fall within this range, by controlling exposure.
let's just say for now that your ISO is fixed at some value.
making the aperture bigger or smaller will change the amount of light that hits the sensor; same deal with changing the shutter speeds. so all you're doing is balancing these two to have a certain part of the scene be correctly exposed (say, for example, a person's face).
when it comes to stops, everything works in halves and doubles. so changing exposure by one stop would involve halving or doubling shutter speed (for example going from 1/250 to 1/500), or halving or doubling the aperture diameter (e.g. when you go from f/2.8 to f/4, the area of the aperture becomes half of what it was and thus you have half the amount of light falling on the sensor).
say your scene is correctly exposed at f/2.8 and shutter speed of 1/250. the exposure would remain the same if you halved one of these and doubled another one, e.g. f/4 and 1/125.
ISO is the sensor's sensitivity, and doubling it from ISO100 to ISO200 basically requires half the light to fall on the sensor to have the same exposure.
does any of this help at all?
[editline]19th August 2014[/editline]
also fyi aperture settings like f/2.8 and f/4 are literally fractions that describe the diameter of the aperture in terms of the focal length of the lens (f)
so for a 50mm lens, f/2.8 literally means aperture diameter of 50/2.8 = 17.86mm
not like you'd ever need to work that out or anything, but knowing that helped me understand it a bit more and remember it better

god help anyone that tries to read my post
