Whenever I come back to this thread now I see sirdownloadsalot's stuff and I feel shitty
Aw, that's super flattering but you shouldn't worry. I've been using photoshop since I was a wee kid back in the CS2 era. It's just constant practice and slow improvement, and there are lots of users in this thread who are plenty better then me.
Where do you find these fonts? They look fantastic.
Tumblr has a lot of good art resources, including font collections. This one is the one I used to use. It hasn't been updated in a year but it's still got good, free fonts.

[t]http://i.imgur.com/wVrgOnS.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/E4fwDPd.png[/t][t]http://i.imgur.com/1O6DOEg.png[/t] I need to use more warm colors About being intimidated by other people's work: you'd be surprised how much school can do for you. A little bit of formal training can really take you a long way if you've got the drive and will to work hard. I'm a first year design student right now at Iowa State (going for architecture, but all the design programs here have the same first year classes), and I was really surprised how much my drawing skills improved even within the first few weeks. If you really think graphic design is what you want to do, don't let other people's work keep you from pursuing it. Just keep in mind that it's also a lot of work to improve your skills in that amount of time. I regularly spend about 8+ hours per assigned drawing project, and I know that some other people in my classes spend much longer. If it sounds intimidating, try to take some base level courses without switching your major, and see if you like it.

Even if you try to copy what that person did to figure out different methods of typography and image alteration without publishing it, figuring out the common aspects of each design that you think looks nice. And specifically for album covers, it helps to look up different genre covers and such. The designs I went with here are all pretty artsy, like some kind of indie band or something. It's an design style that's more minimalist and more based on looking nice without being flashy. Lots of hand written fonts or bold lettering often in colours sampled from the image itself. It's also important to make sure the font and the background contrast so the lettering is readable, without being too obnoxious to be out of place. I'm not trained at all, really. I had a pretty basic high-school visual communication course, which taught some basics like form, typography and the elements and principles of art, but a lot of what I know just comes from theory I've developed alone. Even in this thread, I've learnt a little more about how correct spacing is essential with cursive fonts in order to keep a good flow. It also helps to look at existing album art and ask yourself. "Why does this look nice? How does the lettering match the image and what does it say about the band?". And if you like Graphic Design and want to pursue that, you should go for it. I see designs in this thread that make me feel crap about my stuff too, but I don't let it get to me because every time it inspires me to experiment and try something different. There's probably never going to be a time in a designer or artists life where they don't look at someone else's work and feel a pang of shame or envy. That's all just part of the creative process, and you gotta let that inspire you to do more. Believe me, there are some terrible graphic designers succeeding in the world out there. There's no where to go but up.
Sirdownloadsalot, thanks for these brilliant resources. I too pursue a degree in GCSE Graphic Design.
Made this out of boredom, thought it looked pretty. Band name is a little hard to see, but I meant for it to be that way. [t]http://i.imgur.com/mR9sWg8.jpg[/t]
Been at it all day, I really needed to get my mind off of some stuff
Hey, what are the fonts you used for "Vitino," "strongest when alone," "SPECTAR" and "Suell?" They look really neat. I have a bad sense of appropriate fonts, so I like to gather more to have a bigger library to choose from instead of having to pick a new one from the internet to do the job.
