Smartness probably shouldn't be capitalized in the OP
Smartness probably shouldn't be capitalized in the OP
ironically there are several things in op that could be improved
Smartness kind of made me actually spell and grammar properly but this was way back on my old account and I just found it to be tedious in the end.
I miss rating tallies on your account page, that was the shit, everyday I used to relish in the number of Agree and Funnies I had.

It would be cool if the points system that smartness used (I was not here for it so I am not 100% on this) would be available for display so you could see a leaderboard of the most grammatically correct person. I bet the leader probably wouldn't even be trying.
Then people who like smartness can use it to improve and people who don't don't have to participate.
jesus christ OP, did you just open a thesaurus and then decide to write your post? trying way too hard there, champ.
Maybe he's ironman17's Caribbean alt?
How about Dumbness system instead?
OP's writing has the voice of a 14 year old who's mad that all the people in his generation "Are so imibecilic!"
It's not really about the amount of words you can cram into your writing, but everything. Rhetorical situation, argumentative appeals, tone, diction, organization - all of these factors affect how your writing comes across. You should never use more words than is necessary, and you're definitely breaking that rule of thumb.
Also, an ellipsis does not have spaces in between and you're generally abusing the hell out of it.
This whole talk about English grammar is also pretty jacked up to the plenty of foreigners visiting Facepunch. There are definitely some foreigners on Facepunch that I think really deserve a spot here and work their best to translate from their first language to English. I believe there's a user that makes awesome CS:GO maps here called nicolas or nick or something, and while he's not the best English speaker he's got a big heart and a lot of creative talent.
Superiority on an internet forum based on your knowledge of the English language is just as bad as the people who try way too hard at crafting their image of apathy by writing everything in lazy English. Do you really want a medal for being able to speak a language? Do you think you deserve more of a spot here on Facepunch here because you believe grammar is coorelational with how smart you are? Perhaps there's more to ones intelligence than being able to spell it.
This is the problem with today's youth. They think using words that are more than 4 letters means you must be showing off as opposed to realizing that solely using words that are 4 letters or less just makes you sound really ignorant.
No, it's called having a vocabulary larger than 37 words.
How about:
(i) Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
(ii) Never use a long word where a short one will do.
(iii) If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
(iv) Never use the passive where you can use the active.
(v) Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
(vi) Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.
"Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words? He thinks I don't know the ten-dollar words. I know them all right. But there are older and simpler and better words, and those are the ones I use." - Ernest Hemingway

Even the Bard himself is known for saying "Brevity is the soul of wit."
Or I'm 35 years old and speaking like am imbecilic teenager just seems so . . . imbecilic?
Maybe physically 35 years old, but your brain I'm thinking is closer to 10.
If I'm still here on this forum when I'm 35, someone please kill me
why does it matter how you type on an internet forum? as long as you're not posting dumb shit who actually cares?
[editline]13th September 2014[/editline]
nerds, that's who

I'm sorry, you must have the wrong discussion. We're debating whether or not using "big" words is a mark of intelligence, or lack thereof, and if it is a symptom of a percieved decline in intelligence in modern society (especially among teenagers.)
Otherwise, thank you for coming in here to let us know that you don't care, and that anyone who disagrees is a nerd.

actually the OP was about smartness and i was replying to the OP.
o-oh
Oops. My bad.
I will say this though - the way you post can reinforce your personality, sometimes for the worst. I know a lot of foreigners that have a hard time speaking English and that's totally fine with me, but there's some people that come off as trying hard too look like they don't care by doing shorthand, 4chan or tumblr-style posting, i.e. "lol ok w/e". That's more of a problem with people caring too much about looking like they don't care, though, and I'm not saying everyone that does this is trying to come off as superior with apathy. Elliot was a good example of this.
Hey guys, remember when Garry had Smartness on Facepunch, and people who ignored it were banned? Those times were pretty great, even if it was a form of censorship in one way or another. Maybe we should bring it back, I’m pretty sure we all can agree that it was a unique quirk to the forum, and I’m positive it’s missed enough to deserve a reimplementation.
Now isn't that much nicer to read? I feel like my use of "reimplementation" really exemplifies the simplicity of the text, and it's existence adds to the message rather then detract from it by forcing the reader to process it's massive length.
[sp] I mean I made the message a lot less exciting, so it probably wouldn't have generated as much of a fuss as his orginal post has[/sp]
Bring back HoffPunch instead
4th gayest woop woop
Nah just funion.
This is the problem with today's youth. They think using words that are more than 4 letters means you must be showing off as opposed to realizing that solely using words that are 4 letters or less just makes you sound really ignorant.
>Not spelling single digit numbers out
What a plebian
The problem with smartness is that it punishes you with a very simple slip up and it's just fucking stupid because not everyone wants to type a fucking book on an onine forum
>Not spelling single digit numbers out
What a plebian
Using imageboard-style quotes on a site that doesn't even parse those kind of quotes in the same way a typical imageboard does, while at the same time using the proper formatting to get the board to parse a quote for you, is what ultimately makes you a plebeian and not the person you're quoting. It's like you're making a poor quality post on purpose because in your mind it's funny and satirical, when in reality it's the sort of crap that even 4chan thinks is annoying.
