Using imageboard-style quotes on a site that doesn't even parse those kind of quotes in the same way a typical imageboard does, while at the same time using the proper formatting to get the board to parse a quote for you, is what ultimately makes you a plebeian and not the person you're quoting. It's like you're making a poor quality post on purpose because in your mind it's funny and satirical, when in reality it's the sort of crap that even 4chan thinks is annoying.
Woah... Chill friend.... [editline]14th September 2014[/editline] It's hard 2 tell if people are just ripping on OP or legit annoyed in this thread damn
Maybe Op is right maybe my shitty English online is making it hard to properly understand "proper" English I am the problem with today's youth
Teach me in memes or don't teach me at all [editline]14th September 2014[/editline] They're the only thing I know
Lets not reenact a terrible lesson by a teacher trying to be up to date only to be off a few years to use memes that literally will make us want to die inside.
I'm on the cutting edge of memery
Or I'm 35 years old and speaking like am imbecilic teenager just seems so . . . imbecilic?
If I was 35 years old and bitching about the younger generation on an internet forum I would reconsider my life lol
imagine having failed at life so hard that at age 35 you feel the need to make a thread on an internet forum declaring yourself intellectually superior to all the "imbecilic teenagers" that populate that forum lmaooooo
please bring smartness back
And you're a kid...
i remember when i was 14 and advocated the use of proper grammar and English, now I type poorly and don't bother with good grammar. Get over yourself you're on a video game forum
It's not a huge issue really. Unless you type in a blatantly annoying way, such as all caps, I fail to see why it matters. There is a lot of irony to you wanting it to return op; your post is horribly written.
looks fucking retarded i'm gonna stick with meme arrows ty
when did they start getting called meme arrows that sounds dumb af
hahaha this is the cringiest shit i've seen in a minute
I will say this though - the way you post can reinforce your personality, sometimes for the worst. I know a lot of foreigners that have a hard time speaking English and that's totally fine with me, but there's some people that come off as trying hard too look like they don't care by doing shorthand, 4chan or tumblr-style posting, i.e. "lol ok w/e". That's more of a problem with people caring too much about looking like they don't care, though, and I'm not saying everyone that does this is trying to come off as superior with apathy. Elliot was a good example of this.

imagine having failed at life so hard that at age 35 you feel the need to make a thread on an internet forum declaring yourself intellectually superior to all the "imbecilic teenagers" that populate that forum lmaooooo

i remember when i was 14 and advocated the use of proper grammar and English, now I type poorly and don't bother with good grammar. In fact, lets take a moment to appreciate the irony. This is the original text:
We all remember with longing an easier time when Smartness was abound and those who did not adhere to its sheer perfection were cast down with the sodomites of The Refugee Camp. Smartness was a way of life at Facepunch. It was a unique concoction, an original creation by its founder and pioneer, Garry Newman. Was it a means of control, kind of like the Matrix? Of course, but it was the control that Facepunch had over its inhabitants. We all were bound by it. It brought us together as one. It was a way of promoting education in today's youth. Spell things wrong? There are consequences. Bad grammar? Better go back to school. It was a way of life at Facepunch . . . OUR WAY. Why have you forsaken us? What must we do to get you back? Must we donate to your cause? I'm sure enough of us will. We the users are what makes Facepunch great. So why not give us a small taste of what we beg for . . . why not give us our Smartness back? Oh how we miss you, Smartness.
Breaking it down by one of two sentences:
We[SUP]U[/SUP] all remember with longing an easier time when Smartness was abound[SUP]I[/SUP], and those who did not adhere to its sheer perfection were cast down with the sodomites of The Refugee Camp.
[SUP]U[/SUP]:This is formal writing, one should never refer to the audience, especially in cases where you are assuming something about said audience. [SUP]I[/SUP]:Here the OP is assuming that the entirety of their audience actually remembers the smartness system with longing. This is wrong and in formal writing one must never make assumptions about, or tell their audience what they think. ,: As an example I will be noting this comma here as an example, it belongs because it separates two complete thoughts. Alternatively a semi-colon could replace the "and"; This would have been more acceptable, as these are technically two complete thoughts. A period and second sentence would have been even more ideal as this is an internet forum. From this point on I will be simply underlining specific words to address. They will be addressed in the order they appear. Italics are for things which must be taken in context.
Smartness was a way of life at Facepunch.
On. You are on an internet forum, not at one. An internet forum is not a Starbucks.
It was a unique concoction, an original creation by its founder and pioneer, Garry Newman.
Such lovely redundancy there. Unique and original mean the same thing.
Was it a means of control, kind of like the Matrix? Of course, but it was the control that Facepunch had over its inhabitants.
Never ask questions, especially rhetorical ones, in formal writing. One is always sure of the point they are making; don't waste the audience's time. On top of that, asking rhetorical questions gives the impression that the author thinks the audience is dumb and in need of their divine help to come to conclusions. Same italics, never reference pop culture in formal writing, the audience may not be familiar with the topic the author is referencing, if one really wishes to use a reference such as the matrix one above, it should be explained right afterword so the meaning of the passage isn't lost to an unfamiliar audience. A means of control over a population is a means of control over a population. Good, glad that has been established, that was very unclear to me.
We all were bound by it.
Even those who joined Facepunch for the first time after it was removed? I'm not sure I need to reiterate my point on why one should never address the audience, especially in the form of a broad generalization, but I shall. Writing "we all" is the same as writing "we". Thanks for the redundancy again. "We were all bound by it." would have been slightly better, but still ultimately redundant.
It brought us together as one.
If taken in context with the above: reiterate above point. If not: carry on.
It was a way of promoting education in today's youth.
Implies that only children cannot write properly; this OP is evidence to the contrary.
Spell things wrong? There are consequences. Bad grammar? Better go back to school.
Asking rhetorical questions again... .
It was a way of life at Facepunch . . . OUR WAY.
Ellipsis, while technically allowed to be three spaced periods, is usually best used in precomposed triple-dot glyph form, as a substitution it is considered proper to allow a simple "..." instead of the actual "…" ellipsis character. For example, see above. The above is correct as the ellipsis is the end of a sentence, thus a period follows the ellipsis. This can be done with either a space after the ellipsis or no space. Very flexible system, honestly comes down to how a specific professor wants it done usually.
Why have you forsaken us? What must we do to get you back? Must we donate to your cause? I'm sure enough of us will. We the users are what makes Facepunch great. So why not give us a small taste of what we beg for . . . why not give us our Smartness back? Oh how we miss you, Smartness.
Honestly I'm fucking done. I've only really covered a third of a light revision and I cannot fathom reading the OP's drivel any more. "We, the users, are what makes Facepunch great." The rest is covered above. Jesus fucking christ. [editline]14th September 2014[/editline] EDIT: it seems superscript doesn't work. I apologize, as I cannot edit my post to fix it either. [editline]14th September 2014[/editline]
Or I'm 35 years old and speaking like am imbecilic teenager just seems so . . . imbecilic?
You sure showed me! Instead of being an imbecilic teenager, you're a hypocritic thirty-five year old imbecile. So much better! At least in the case of a teenager, they have their youth as an excuse for being retarded. You on the other hand... .
Hmm.
There is a difference, though. I don't think fruxodaily is a douche, and he is making a point: this is a gaming forum, not an English exam. I can read his posts and he does put effort into contributing. (At least from what I've seen. He's a cool dude.) The first and last are closer, but not quite what I'm talking about. What I'm trying to explain is lack of contribution emphasized by terrible writing.
Looks like OP doesn't know what constitutes an educated person. It's knowing your surroundings at any given time and being able to use the part of your vocabulary that fits the most. Aka being aware of one's linguistic situation and adapting to it. Aka knowing that using fancy language (which isn't even that fancy, as draugur convincingly demonstrated) in front of an audience that doesn't welcome it is dumb. And that's where someone failed miserably. I'm all for bringing the smartness back, as long as it accounts for stuff like this, so posts such as the OP would warrant a ban.
Not only that, but I want people to think about what they post. I'm not saying Facepunch has to become a serious place for serious people, but I want people to put thought into their posts. It doesn't require much care to make a quality (smart or funny) contribution to discussions. The term "shitposting" needs to expand it's reach, and people should be banned for it.
I gotta say I do like proper capitalization and punctuation, something that does seem to pop up more on FP. But then again, looking trough this thread, it's like what, 1 in 25 people that don't properly punctuate. You're ruining this forums looks guys :pwn: No I suppose it's not bad at all. Compared to other forums I think FP actually still has some pretty good writing. [editline]16th September 2014[/editline] I do, however, really miss the bad-reading rating. There's some horrible reading.
This is the problem with today's youth. They think using words that are more than 4 letters means you must be showing off as opposed to realizing that solely using words that are 4 letters or less just makes you sound really ignorant. No, it's called having a vocabulary larger than 37 words.
You fkn wot m8, I'll hook u in the gabber u cheeki dawg Who cares, it is a internet forum. Not a fucking spelling bee.
Smartness made facepunch up its own arse and is one of the reasons i stopped posting here for a period of at least 4 years. Fun is now allowed, which is all good.
Actually it can be argued that I just tricked you into wasting at least 20 minutes of your life correcting a post that took me 45 seconds to create.
"Don't worry guys, I was just pretending to be retarded." More importantly, if it "took you 45 seconds to write" (I strongly doubt that) you should probably consider slowing the fuck down, since you can't even post in a way that coincides with the system you are trying to advocate the return of. On old Facepunch your excuse of "It's okay to be shit because I typed it really quick and don't give a fuck lol" would have you banned for being a bellend. I also only spent about 10 minutes total on that, formatting and all. Grammar isn't really that hard, and it sure isn't as important as you're hypocritically claiming it to be.
I have a 2-year old, make 6 digits, own a house and like my life. I'd say I'm ok.
So you have a family, money and seem to be happy, yet you're still having to come on an internet forum to try and put down other people by acting like a condescending dipshit. Ok lmao, I'm sure you're fine!
Actually it can be argued that I just tricked you into wasting at least 20 minutes of your life correcting a post that took me 45 seconds to create.
He's done something that's a lot more productive than anything you've accomplished in the last few hours.
I have a 2-year old, make 6 digits, own a house and like my life. I'd say I'm ok.
I bet you scold your child for his grammar and make six digits in Cookie Clicker. Where's the wife, by the way? There's no mention of that. Owning a house isn't an achievement, and you should consider the gist of other people's criticisms over your own. Self-praising is less genuine than people who are calling you out for being terrible. Take note: When you step up to the plate to criticize an entire community, you should make sure you don't look like an idiot yourself, let alone a backpedaling idiot with a horrendous superiority complex and an unfortunate child.
Six digit income isn't impressive when the decimal point is two digits in from the right. Lots of people know how to fuck and have a child. Quite a lot of them don't even do it on purpose.
I wasn't criticizing the community, I was saying I liked the smartness system and wanted it back.
