If you're going to live in a country, please learn their language first
How does that relate to them learning our language? If they are a U.S. citizen, which yes I've watched the documentaries some of which are tragic about how difficult obtaining citizenship is, but if they have it then they have the same opportunities as anyone else. The only people who are "exploited" are the ones who can't find work because they're illegal and basically don't have rights. I'm not trying to wage an argument over illegal immigrants and how I disapprove of them. That's not exactly the topic at hand.
But you don't have to have a citizenship to be legal.
For the person who claims that he is not a nationalist, you yourself advocate that learning the country's 'official' language is owing the people of the nation respect.
Yes. The respect they acknowledge is our culture and at very least our language. Because god knows we honor theirs. How many times have you seen spanish instructions coupled with english?
They don't have to drop their language, they should learn ours though or try their best. I'm sure your mom has a hard enough time trying to find work with poor communication skills. How can you not agree with me?
How can you be under the impression that america should suddenly change ways and start requiring its children to learn 5 different languages? What cause would there be for this? Why should we change for them when they depend on us?
But you don't have to have a citizenship to be legal.
I'm well aware of that. As long as you don't have it though, some things will be harder like finding jobs which was my main point.

How the hell is having children learn different languages at a school a sign that America is being submissive to other races/cultures/ethnicities?
If we are being submissive to 'them' then we would have a compulsory requirement to learn Spanish and only Spanish in California, Arizona, Texas, and Nevada. But no, we do not, we were choices to learn other languages such as Russian, Chinese, German, and French.
Shit, I take German in Southern California. A place in where German has nearly no use ever unless I intend to retire in Europe. I don't take it because I respect Germans, nor do I have an intent on migrating to it.

My point is we can't learn all languages so you we have to choose one so we all understand each other. English happens to be very popular in the US and so it is that middle language for that country.
So tell me. Why do you think that immigrants should not be required to learn english when migrating to mainly english speaking country? Are we really that ignorant and intolerant for asking something so harsh and cruel?
They stand for something though don't they bud. Can't run from that.
They mean you win. Only the losers of the argument call the opposition dumb.
You might find it interesting to know that, at the time of our nations' inception, English only barely won out as the official language, because the vast majority of the immigrants were German. And that's why we're an English speaking people living in counties with German names.
You might find it interesting that actually, we have no official language.
English is considered as such, but the US has no actual official language.

I never stated that Immigrants should never learn the country's native language. Stop putting words in my statements.
I should also note that countries abroad tutor their students on learning English. I doubt many of those students tend to be trying to immigrate to the U.S. for a job either.

I'm not referring to my own rating that I gave the post. I'm referring to the 10-20 other people who just read his posts and rated him that.
Besides I don't consider what he's doing an argument. Posting one to three word responses, on a forum no less, does not an argument make.

So why are we arguing if we agree? We have nothing left to discuss.

They owe the people of its nation respect. Absolutely.
I'm only going against your nationalist ideals on how people learn the common language out of pure respect. It's distgusting and it should not be considered a reason any more. I don't know where you went off in a tangent concerning about a country submitting to other cultures.
I want to move to America. I will just learn English first with all the spare time I have, using the many well-funded libraries my current nation affords me.

We're not going to agree on everything. As far as I'm concerned my "nationalist" ideals are completely irrelevant if not to this thread than at least to my discussion interests.

Depending on where you're coming from that's a very realistic possibility. Most countries have good enough language programs.

Grr fucking immigrant Swedes we speak American here not your primitive Viking gobbledygook.
Surprisingly enough the above is not generally the issue.

I'm not saying immigrants should not learn the language but expecting everyone to be conversationally fluent when they get here is absurd.
All I'm asking is that foreigners take the time to learn our language and somehow thats xenophobic.
Get the fuck out of here. You're no better than a name calling 3rd grader. Where in any of my posts did I make it seem like I hate foreigners? I'm third generation italian, fourth generation german. I love both countries and their peoples.
Are you fucking kidding me? You've been spewing ad hominems since your first post and you're going to take the high ground like that?
How are you going to tell me in honesty that statements like "people deserve to be harassed for not learning the language of the country" and "follow the culture or get out" in addition to implying that you're rejecting foreign doesn't heavy imply you're xenophobic.
Mexicans would rather be in Mexico. They only come for more money. They don't want to be A, Americans, so they don't learn the language.
Most other groups came to escape bad conditions in their old country.

What I hate most is people who speak Spanish right in front of other people just because they know you can't understand them. Then they laugh at you and when you ask them what they're laughing at they say it was something else.
That's why I want to learn Russian, so I can speak it with my brother in front of a bunch of confused Mexicans and then laugh at them.
They could at least learn it once they're in the US, I get pissed that there's Mexicans speaking Spanish all over the fucking place, it annoys me, I'm fine with it if it's in their house, but in public places no.
Sure koreans can talk to each other in Korean, Russians can talk to each other in russian, but Mexicans talking to each other in the public GOD FORBID!
Like, are you seriously that bothered when people talk other languages in public? Hey buddy, sometimes we speak spanish not because we dont know english, its because we dont want to talk to YOU.

I don't think that's what he's talking about. Problems arise when someone only speaks their own language and cannot communicate with the majority of the populace.

Holy shit are they speaking the Black Speech or some shit? Is it really so offensive that you want it only spoken in private? Is Spanish the linguistic equivalent of kinky sex or something?
spanish is right up there with urinating in public I guess
Probably going to be called racist etc or whatever, but as far as I am concerned, English has won out, and it would be better for the world as a whole if every human could easily communicate with one another. A world without language barriers would be awesome, and English is already taught in a lot of non English speaking countries to give the students the best chances in life.
My Grandmother is from Japan and she learned to speak English. No one posted signs or made products in Japanese for her.

The language issue usually dies out with the First-Generation immigrants anyway.

It probably wins on native speakers, but total speakers? I very much doubt it.

English one because the richest men spoke it.
In terms of being an actual good language, English is probably the single most confusing language there is.

Those aren't xenophobic statements in the slightest. I want people to learn our fucking language when they come into our country. Its so god damn mind numbingly simple, how can you possible construed it to me having a fear of foreign culture.
Our culture isn't strict, our culture is formed by other people's culture, but alas it is still our culture. All I'm saying is learn it. Otherwise how can you call yourself a citizen? You don't have to agree with it, you can live your own style of life. But you have to know where you are. Especially if you're going to be voting people into office.
All I'm saying is when people get harassed for being an obvious foreigner who can't learn to communicate with other citizens don't deserve my pity. Why should I pity them? Give me one good reason.
All you've done is throw personal insults around and discounting the opposite side because of their character and not their points and ignoring their actual argument. What do we call that again? You said it once... oh yeah ad hominem. Accusing me of exactly what you're doing. More ironic than the OP.
In fact, I don't even know what your argument actually is other than I'm a xenophobe.

Yet you can't personally testify to that because you're a native speaker. Pure viral speculation. I can only wonder how many people read those sorts of statements and actually believe it.
As a telemarketer for a charity, I call a lot of people everyday. And it pisses me to no end when I call someone and they answer and say "I don't speak English" or they answer the phone speaking Spanish. If you're going to come to America, learn English first. Every other culture knows how this works, they have come to America and integrated into society as normal people. The British, French, Chinese, Russians, Germans, and even the Bosnians have all integrated into American society. They only group that has failed to is the Mexicans. Now I understand that some Mexicans are good people and have learned English and integrated into American society, but many of them have not.
And you know that these Mexicans who don't speak English are illegal immigrants, because you have to learn English in order to become a US citizen, it's part of the citizenship test that all legal immigrants are required to take. This doesn't just go for America, it goes for all countries, please, learn the language of the country you're immigrating to. I wouldn't move to France if I didn't speak French or Japan if I didn't speak Japanese.

You realize that people can learn English and then attest to how difficult it was, right?

Shut up. Everyone has the right for their own language. Also most people are probably just shitting you telling you that they don't speak a word of english. People hate telemarketers.
