• If you're going to live in a country, please learn their language first

What a generalised thread. What if these people are too busy fleeing their country and hoping to apply for a green card to learn the language? There's a reason that signs you see are sometimes also in Spanish, you know. Maybe YOU could make your life easier, instead of complaining about people speaking Spanish, by uhhh I dunno, LEARNING SPANISH? In fact, I figured charity workers would have to be understanding and forgiving to work like that. Maybe you should get a job in a more xenophobic place, where it's 100% caucasians only! No colours!
English isn't the hardest language to learn.
It all depends what the starting language is.
People are only afraid of telemarketers because they sell shit you don't need.
Personally, I think that permanent immigrants should be forced to learn the native language, while temporary immigrants should just be encouraged to learn it. I'm sorry, but the amount of times I've moved countries, I could not possibly learn the languages.
english isn't the official language it'd still be nice to learn it if you live here though also, for people who are saying that we should learn different languages, why? our country is almost an entire continent, 98% full of people who speak english as a primary language there's no practical need to learn any other languages
Hey Russians - get your ignorant heads out of your vodka filled assholes and learn latvian. Thank you.
I work as a telemarketer (selling a decent product with no commission, so I'm not a douchebag), and try to replicate whatever accent they speak with. In my country, if you say you are not interested, you'll probably be called back at some point, but if you ask to get removed from the list, it's as simple as the click of a button.
See, I'd talk to you if you made an effort like that. Though most telemarkers I've talked to say they don't have the privileges to remove numbers. Does this vary on country?
People are only afraid of telemarketers because they sell shit you don't need.
I sell electricity in a market where there is absolutely no difference between retailers except cost, and the company I work for the cheapest.
As a telemarketer for a charity, I call a lot of people everyday. And it pisses me to no end when I call someone and they answer and say "I don't speak English" or they answer the phone speaking Spanish. If you're going to come to America, learn English first. Every other culture knows how this works, they have come to America and integrated into society as normal people. The British, French, Chinese, Russians, Germans, and even the Bosnians have all integrated into American society. They only group that has failed to is the Mexicans. Now I understand that some Mexicans are good people and have learned English and integrated into American society, but many of them have not. And you know that these Mexicans who don't speak English are illegal immigrants, because you have to learn English in order to become a US citizen, it's part of the citizenship test that all legal immigrants are required to take. This doesn't just go for America, it goes for all countries, please, learn the language of the country you're immigrating to. I wouldn't move to France if I didn't speak French or Japan if I didn't speak Japanese. -The American People
You don't need to speak English to be a citizen of America. There is nop official language, everythime the governemnt has attempted to make english the offical language, the spanish speaking communities have spoken out.

But they always found a way. I also live in Australia.

In those cases, I just play them Nicholas Cage Losing His Shit from youtube while still talking to them. Or some soundboard action. I've never even been to a country that uses English as its first official language. I taught myself English at a young age by playing Pokemon (Silver) and nagging my big brother to translate what some characters were saying. And I'd say I'm doing damn fine when it comes to writing, reading and speaking in English. But then again, I had the advantage of learning from a young age.
Hey Russians - get your ignorant heads out of your vodka filled assholes and learn latvian. Thank you.
I am Latvian, have been living in latvia all my life and all I can say is, latvian language SUCKS DICK. It's really shitty and worthless language that only one tiny country speaks. Instead imo latvia should change from latvian to russian or english, because our language is one of the reasons our economy is junk, because no business from another country wants to learn some shitty language. So yeah, latvian is terrible and when they tried to force people to learn latvian and switch languages in all schools to latvian was a very asshole move. Also most russians(and latvians too) are unable to learn english, so what makes you think they can learn latvian.

The problem I have with this situation is this: My parents are immigrants (25+y ago) from an Eastern European country. They came to the United States with the assumption that they would have to learn english. And they did. They worked hard to learn the language because they needed to. Nobody would accommodate them, and they expected no accommodations. What I cannot stand is people who move to the United States, or any other country for that means, and expect everyone else to accommodate them because they refuse to learn the local language. The practice of making it easier for them to speak native languages such as spanish discourages them from speaking english. There are people I know whose parents still can only speak basic english, because they immigrated here from Southern America and never needed to speak english outside of their small hispanic community. Everyone who expects to live in a country other than their homeland should expect to learn the language. It's truly necessary, and they put a burden on others by expecting some sort of special treatment.

Russians walk about thinking that they own the place, and god forbid if you don't talk in Russian with them. They'll rip your balls straight off.
If you live in a country and don't speak its language. You as a guest in that country, able to live in that country in safety and gain a better life, the least you can do is learn the god damned language of those who live there, I'd do the same, at least show my appreciation in some way then.
Ignoring the fact that you're a telemarketer, I have to agree on this. If I were to just up and move to Russia, I wouldn't go without learning Russian. I would consider it rude to inconvenience every local I meet by refusing to learn the local language and trying to communicate in English. It's understandable if you're just visiting a country, but if you're going to live there you should have the decency to learn their language. Also, you should definitely make an Ask a Telemarketer anything thread :fuckyou:

Finland's language is like the 5th hardest language to learn in the world, our economy is doing quite well. Business is usually done in English.
I want to move to America.
actually mandarin wins you're the minority bro
There are several problems with what your "Mandarin is going to be the language of the future, and eventually replace English" theory: -English is already the dominant language throughout the entire planet and the lingua franca, this is because of both the Americanization of the rest of the world and the spread of English through the former British Empire. -Mandarin is only one of several Chinese languages, and it doesn't even have dominance over all of China and Taiwan. -Mandarin is only popular in China, in other countries, including Taiwan (they speak another Chinese language there), it is practically non-existent
Yeah there are lots of non-English nor non-Finnish language speakers. It sometimes feels like that they don't even want to learn the language.
French
Pffhahaha
Ok nominee thread for linguistic xenophobia 2011. There are a lot of people in the world.
Think they're just trying to avoid you mate.

Everyone there knows russian, so why bother?
Ask about Toronto and our Chinese...
