I learned English playing video games and watching movies with subtitles. it's not very good but i can understand everything an American says.
As the OP said. Would you move to Mexico without learning Spanish first?
if i lived in a nation such as somalia, where i didn't have access to the sorts of things that i would in america and where my children are in danger or i may be in danger hell yes i would move to another nation without learning that nations language
They could at least learn it once they're in the US, I get pissed that there's Mexican's speaking Spanish all over the fucking place, it annoys me, I'm fine with it if it's in their house, but in public places no.
also stop using the word mexican to describe an ethnicity far more ethnic groups in america speak spanish than just mexicans [editline]14th May 2011[/editline]
Oh yeah, that's why it's a requirement to take 2 years of a different language to graduate highschool right?
pretty sure it's not
I don't really give a shit who speaks what as long as I can understand them. I live in an area with large concentrations of both hispanic and Asian cultures, both of which speak their own language more often than not. And a few of my coworkers came here not knowing a single word of English, so shut up until you understand how hard it is to grasp a language you have no understanding of.
English isn't the hardest language to learn.
Especially not from Spanish - a lot of the words are cognates.
also stop using the word mexican to describe an ethnicity far more ethnic groups in america speak spanish than just mexicans
Mexico =/= Spanish Spain = Spanish Mexico = Mexican. Not hard to understand.
They could at least learn it once they're in the US, I get pissed that there's Mexican's speaking Spanish all over the fucking place, it annoys me, I'm fine with it if it's in their house, but in public places no.
It's one thing to want people to learn English. It's another thing to want to outlaw Spanish in public places.
They could at least learn it once they're in the US, I get pissed that there's Mexican's speaking Spanish all over the fucking place, it annoys me, I'm fine with it if it's in their house, but in public places no.
This. Dude, this was horrible, I was at the store I work at the other day, and some Mexican stole the key to the bathroom, I was like "ma'am, could you please give me the key" and she was like "no habla ango americana" or some Mexican shit like that.
Not every spanish speaking person is a Mexican....... Also since when do British people not speak english?

Late [editline]15th May 2011[/editline] Hnnng automerge
To expect one to learn Engliah once they get here is inevitable. To expect them to have a comprehensive knowledge of one of the hardest languages to learn before getting here and ignoring the ecnomic and social conditions they are in is not.
If they are in that bad of a situation, how would they be moving legally?
I don't give a shit what language you speak. There isn't legal facto language, and people can speak whatever language they like. And plus, I don't give a shit if they're illegal immigrants. If they're on US soil, they're Americans in my eyes, and superseding that, they're humans. Who happen to speak a different language than the majority. Deal with it. I also don't like this statement: "Now I understand that some Mexicans are good people and have learned English" Seriously? Because you didn't learn English, you're not a good person? That's what you seem to be implying there. And the fact that you tie that into "some Mexicans are" seems kinda racially charged, there. Now personally, as you really don't need to know english besides schooling in many south western parts, then there's no real reason for them to learn it besides it's "the" language. For those out of that area, it is a practicality issue, and it should be taught. And it is. But to generalize and find distaste towards people for using their native language? Pathetic.
Wait, so you're telling me that the immigrant groups who were primarily immigrating in the late 19th century have assimilated but the group that was primarily immigrating during the late 20th century onward has yet to fully assimilate? Hmm I wonder why?
yeah how dare those mexicans use a language they have a more comprehensive knowledge of when conversing rather than one they are still learning.
It depends when and where
I learned Italian in under a year.
1. Anecdotal evidence does not describe how hard or easy it is for others to learn a language. 2. English is one of the hardest languages to learn.
Not every spanish speaking person is a Mexican....... Also since when do British people not speak english?
Of course not, but there aren't too many illegal Spaniards or Chileans in America, whereas there are tons of illegal Mexicans.
this just sounds like another thread where people will stroke their nationalist cocks about people not learning their languages bring on the useless anecdotes about that one time that mexican guy said something or whatever
It depends when and where
Like we have more Mexicans than Caucasians in Oklahoma now?
1. Anecdotal evidence does not describe how hard or easy it is for others to learn a language. 2. English is one of the hardest languages to learn.
However, when you come into a country, you better at least be able to speak a little bit of the language.
yeah those dickheads should learn english just so telemarketers don't get pissed off when they annoy them. i wish i didn't know english just to piss you off
pretty sure it's not
do you go to school over here? No. Then why are you saying it's not?
1. Anecdotal evidence does not describe how hard or easy it is for others to learn a language. 2. English is one of the hardest languages to learn.
English is a mix of pretty much every language, and it's pretty close to a lot of Spanish words.
While I agree with your meaning, I have to add on that you said it in a really asshole-ish way. And slightly racist - Mexicans, even Hispanics in general, are far from the only ones to immigrate to the US without fluency in English. The professor I had for Java last term had his fair share of linguistic difficulty, and he immigrated from India several years ago. There's also plenty of other immigrants I know who are a bit Anglo-challenged. Like the Baron, who immigrated from Germany shortly after WW2, but still drops into German quite often. And for the record, many people come here on work permits or educational visas, which do not require fluency in English. I once worked at a Brazilian-food restaurant where I was the only person fully fluent in English - most of my co-workers spoke only a small amount of English. I actually taught them quite a bit, while learning some Portuguese myself.
English is a mix of pretty much every language, and it's pretty close to a lot of Spanish words.
Having taken two years of Spanish in school, I can say that the differences are very large, and to try to learn English from a Spanish standpoint would be very very difficult given the massive differences and more simplistic grammatical style in Spanish. And no, not really, most nouns and verbs are very different.
so you can communicate with people if you wanna talk to people who speak spanish learn spanish, the same applies for anyone who wants to talk to people who speak english there's no they vs us and english isn't even the native language of the US anyway
Alright, let's start teaching every country with US immigrants English ok it's only fair
do you go to school over here? No. Then why are you saying it's not?
because i've never heard of such a thing, the GED doesn't require you to know any extra languages plus most people i know here don't speak any other language than english yet have passed high school
pretty sure it's not
I need two years of language to pass and the only classes I have on campus are spanish 1 and 2. Why am I required to learn another language to get a decent job in my country? Florida here by the way
Alright, let's start teaching every country with US immigrants English ok it's only fair
what, do you think the rest of the world accidentally learned english?
