we aren't talking about a vacation. ideally, yes; people should learn the country's language they are emigrating to but when you need to get out of a shitty situation (especially for your family's sake) where your country's education system sucks and is poor and fucked up from all kinds of cartel violence you really don't have time to sit there and read english for dummies
Thank you.
Maybe they are using it as an excuse because they don't want to talk to fucking telemarketers. Also you can be legal without being a citizen, it's called a visa. Also plenty of English speaking people go to other countries and don't bother to learn their language. Do you know how many English people go to Spain and retire there or something and barely know hola?
Now make those people almost fifty percent of the population in several areas. [editline]14th May 2011[/editline]
Tourists don't live in a country permanently however.
You missed the whole point
Sort of makes this harder to understand, but imagine this. Generally, tourists do not know the language of the country they are touring.[most of it at least] These people are a nuisance even in the short time they are there just because of that one fact. Now make that tourist a permanent resident or at least a resident for four years. and I live pretty much right next to miami, this shit pisses me off
my main point is that you'd do the same thing if you were in the same situation learn spanish and start holding community classes for cheap, advertise in spanish and english. making a difference would be a lot more respectable than complaining on facepunch
THE TELEMARKETER SITUATION IS IRRELEVANT, STOP DOING THAT.
Seems pretty relevant to me :/
Yeah if you jerk off during class you won't learn much, but if you actually pay attention you can, believe it or not, learn a language!
Not fluently, they don't cover fucking everything, just the basics. [editline]14th May 2011[/editline]
THE TELEMARKETER SITUATION IS IRRELEVANT, STOP DOING THAT.
it's very fucking relevant
No. I'm saying it's in their best interests to learn it, but they don't fucking have to, and you can't tell them they have to. Also was that last part like, what is that.
I'm not trying to force anyone to learn the language, if they want to be stuck without any communication skills in the country thats fine, but I'm still allowed to complain about how annoying it is when I ask for a Number 2 at Burger King and all I hear is "que".
it's very fucking relevant
In what way is it relevant? Maybe OP's customer was faking, but that doesn't change the fact that people who don't speak the official language are a pain to deal with.
How was I trying to get people riled up? It's sadly true. We have social programs that help illegal immigrants and give them government aid and try to help them become legal immigrants. That's our tax money that could be used for other things, especially when we're in an economic recession. We should just deport them.
Illegal immigrants give more in taxes than the average legal American because of the lack of tax returns. In fact, in 2009, Arizona received 9 billion dollars in taxes form illegal immigrants. 21 US cities, including DC, refuse to deport illegals or cooperate with federal officials in illegal immigration investigations because the financial benefits of having the illegals int heir city outweighs the damages. Considering how many corporations and billionaires/millionaires spend under 100$ in taxes a year, I'd say that illegal immigrants help us more than the "best and brightest" of Americans do. Plus the willingness to do hard manual labor that most Americans refuse to do (we have a giant surplus in manual farm jobs- a surplus that isn't being filled so large that we're exporting the jobs to China. UFW held a promotional challenge to offer thousands of these jobs to Americans, and only 2 applied), and for wages far below what it's worth and often for less than minimum wage. Cheap labor, high taxes,, benefit the nation. Your tax money comes from them. Next time you're using the tax money, you should be thankfult hat illegal immigrants are here to provide those extra billions, instead of worrying that that Mexican is stealing your money unlawfully. God forbid we use some of the money we leech from them on helping anothe rhuman being that happens to be born on the opposite side of a river, eh?

Get with the times man.
I'm still allowed to complain about how annoying it is when I ask for a Number 2 at Burger King and all I hear is "que".
wow stop making up shit if they can't speak english then they wouldn't get a cashier's job unless you are literally the only person there
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Bush There ya go
bush increased regulation in many areas
yeah that's way different though. and if anything, you should be complaining to Burger King for hiring these people.
I can complain to Burger King or I can complain to the immigrant that comes here without learning the language, what the fuck is the difference?
If I went to a Danish forum, I'd FOR SURE learn how to speak it, and have proper grammar, so for me it applies when people visit my forums, and forums such as FP I dont understand why people think its soo irrational.
wow stop making up shit if they can't speak english then they wouldn't get a cashier's job unless you are literally the only person there
UGH GOD STOP USING EXAMPLES JESUS CHRIST MAN Sorry, this actually happened. Hate to burst your bubble, but Burger King isn't exactly a prestine English-only establishment, and they often hire Spanish speakers to work there because there are tons of Spanish speaking people in my state.
If I went to a Danish forum, I'd FOR SURE learn how to speak it, and have proper grammar, so for me it applies when people visit my forums, and forums such as FP I dont understand why people think its soo irrational.
how is that related in anyway
Maybe you should adapt to the up and coming language. Get with the times man.
We didn't do that when the Chinese migrated in the 19th century. Why would we do it now? And no, there will always be more English speakers in America than Mexicans, even if the entire population of Mexico moved here. And why should we give up our culture and our language just to accommodate for illegal Mexicans?
Now you are expecting me to have the ability, time, and resource to teach someone else a language?
now you are expecting those in foreign countries to have the time, ability, or resources to learn a complicated language before arriving?
http://www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/briefs/phc-t20/index.html
I didn't say a whole state, I said an area.
Sorry, this actually happened.
no it didn't
I can complain to Burger King or I can complain to the immigrant that comes here without learning the language, what the fuck is the difference?
Burger King will actually do something about it because they're a business.
now you are expecting those in foreign countries to have the time, ability, or resources to learn a complicated language before arriving?
Just enough to get carry along a simple conversation
We didn't do that when the Chinese migrated in the 19th century. Why would we do it now?
no it didn't
durr im right youre wrong end of story
how is that related in anyway
Well it makes sense. Would you join a Russian language forum if you didn't speak Russian?
I agree on some level, but second generation citizens might never have been taught English. I feel that these people shouldn't be antagonized though, alot of people can't easily learn English who emigrate here considering they might be working too much or just not have the time or money to learn English.
I pretend not to speak english when telemarketers call me, maybe that's your problem.
My whole point in this thread is that it's really a common courtesy to learn the language, but I don't see that much around me, my state requiring me to be the one adapting and all.
if i were an immigrant i wouldnt bother to take several years learning this shitty language so i could talk to an idiot american kid without a translator
Somebody doesn't like Americans.
If I went to a Danish forum, I'd FOR SURE learn how to speak it, and have proper grammar, so for me it applies when people visit my forums, and forums such as FP I dont understand why people think its soo irrational.
Yeah but you can't learn a language in a war torn economically stricken message board.
