Well I'm not sure how well it could be used in this sort of game, but even if it's just something like seeing a creepy figure outside of a window as you pass by it. Only because the first playthrough of the game seems like it'll be amazing, but after you get a feel for how long has to pass before the intruder can spawn makes the beginning less fun (Assuming the events are random triggers). I'm also suggesting this because I want to watch people stream the game and freak out when they see them. But as you said, it's still likely it could hurt the game more than make it better.
Unless it's made so that the hallucinations could appear instead of the intruder.
Making the player paranoid about if he/she actually saw the intruder or just a figment of imagination.

that should only happen when you haven't eaten or slept in a while. I once went about two days without sleep; by the time I went to bed, I could have sworn to god I'd seen a spider about the size of my computer tower, just climbing up my wall like it didn't even weigh anything. I was also incredibly paranoid by that point, so I felt like I was being watched and I was constantly looking around my room.

I also tended to see black spots out of the corner of my eyes, sometimes they were even moving.

And then you waste your one bullet on nothing. That would suck so much.

I was talking to a friend about this game and your idea. He said it'd be neat if there a fear-type aspect to your character that can build up from different environmental and sim conditions that if you turned around fast your character would see the intruder and it would automatically shoot your gun at it if you had it in hand.
The only thing we think might be troublesome with the game is the replay value. If the gun and ammo, no matter how scarce, only spawn in a set few spawns. There's no reason not to just go to each spot for the 3 days to find it and then just wait outside or in a bedroom for the intruder. We feel like there needs to be a point where settling with a kitchen knife would actually be okay without intentionally seeking a challenge or being lazy.
Edit:
Of course you might already have something for that, but I just thought I'd voice the concern just in case.
That's why randomized vitality on the intruder would be rather great.
You wouldn't know for sure if the kitchen knife would cut it.
It could, but it might as well not.
[editline]17th September 2012[/editline]
But having your gun shoot automatically would be stupid.
The game should let the player make that mistake.
I think it would be neat if there was numerous variants of the intruder. Just like 3-5 variants randomly picked each playthrough and you don't know what you're gonna get until the 'showdown' day
I dunno, I think it's pretty cool and it'd add more re-playability on top of randomized item locations, just a thought.

We disagree with that statement. Not knowing always leaves you wanting to be over prepared. Merely saying he could be weak doesn't really amount to much. Then if his health is low and you did manage to find a gun, the end becomes quite anti-climatic. I think there should be some kind of cutoff between randomized health and your current arsenal. Something like, if the gun is somewhere close-by in your house, his vitality will be through the roof because the game expects you to have found the weapon. If the weapon is much farther out, then the intruder would be a lot more frail. That way you first frantically check your house before anxiously deciding to settle with a worse weapon. I think it still needs some tweaking, but it's better than just random vitality.
As for your gun randomly shooting, no player will make that mistake. The hallucination would have to actually attack you and then it would become 'unfair'. Besides, the hallucinations would only trigger if you don't take care of yourself, so in the end it would be the player making the mistake. Then the game becomes much more intense knowing your almost surefire method to take down the intruder just disappeared and you have to frantically rethink your strategy.
Either way, it's hard to suggest these things since we really don't know how the game plays currently but I have to say the more I think about it, the more excited I get for it. Best of luck to you Mister Royzo, I really hope to see it get greenlit within the next few batches.
Depends really on if the hallucination would actually look like the intruder.
Depends really on if the hallucination would actually look like the intruder.
Rather than visual hallucinations, there should be audio ones. It'd be especially creepy to be sitting in your barricaded bedroom and hear the sound of tapping on your window or footsteps on the stairs. I'd find that to be much creepier, especially since the Intruder him/her/itself probably won't be showing up until showtime (right?), so a visual hallucination wouldn't be quite as punchy.

Hah, I once stood awake without sleep for over 48 hours, and by the end of it I started seeing movement on the corner of my eyes every once in a while, and hearing people say things when it was just my brain going bananas.
Oh, and a creepy ass black shape at the bottom of the stairs that disappeared the moment I looked directly at it.
If there will be any visual hallucination, they'll need to be subtle and make the player question if he even saw a hallucination. Something like a shadow passing on the floor, or something else like an item becoming distorted in the background. I can't explain what I mean by that well, but it would look like something moved past it or whatever.
Did Ruyzo give any word on Intruder health?
Did Ruyzo give any word on Intruder health?
Nope. Nor what it does or look like. Only that I put a lot of time and effort into making it sophisticated and -quite ironically- memorable.
How close is it to being done?

inb4 it is a skeleton.
inb4 it is a skeleton.
It should have a INCREDIBLY rare chance of being a skeleton.

feels like 2005 again man
Need moar videos.
Let's get this hype thing on the rails
Hey Royzo, since you're trying to aqquire a Souce license. How is getting a license? Is it particularly expensive or anything along the lines?
From what I've understood, Valve doesn't give the license to just anybody, you have show something done before they consider selling you the license.
I still don't understand how the Revelations 2012 team got their license.
Any progress?
How many different portable light sources will there be?
Or is the flashlight something you acquire easily.
Just thought of that when I got to navigate trough a pitch black hall using my zippo as a light source.
The fire from the zippo was only bright enough when I was moving slowly.
I was reading this, when my door opened slowly and creaked, I tensed up.
It was my dog opening the door to get in :I

My dog comes up here upstairs several times a day and starts "talking" to me by growling, whining and sometimes howling. It's fun to try and pretend to understand what he's saying and I'll just answer "Yeah" "I agree" "Really?" "ok" which encourages the silly dog even more to keep it up
By this rate he learns to talk finnish :v:
I look forward to the day when he comes up the stairs and says "Where's the goddamn beer?"

What if small objects could disappear or change places (doors could open or shut too)? But this would only happen when the player is somewhere else, so it would be confusing when they get back. And it would fit perfectly with the amnesia thing.
Looks like fun.
I had to do this.
I've actually managed to get in touch with Valve's licensing guy again. They didn't really ask me to show a portfolio or anything, so the rumours of Valve being picky about their licensees must be untrue.
I'd love to elaborate on the licensing process for those who are curious or want to get a license themselves, but it's kept under tight wraps. You can always contact them yourselves though.
I haven't been checking in here as frequently as I'd like to the last couple of days because I'm quite busy at the moment. I'm trying to work on The Intruder, sort out the licensing, earn money for the project and find a company for an internship all at once.
It's all going fine but small tasks like visiting this thread or the Greenlight page tend to get skipped first. The game's actually doing really well there, apparently it's #16.

Different flashlights is actually something I've been looking in to. Like you I had to walk through a pitch black hall with nothing but a small LED lamp from my keychain. I hadn't thought of a zippo though, that could be fun as well.

perhaps if you had multiple flashlights, you could set one down and turn it on and have it light up a hallway until its battery runs out.

I was thinking that there's a default flashlight in a very obvious position when you start, and then having alternative light sources available in/around the house.
Fits in with my idea of non-essential items that you find if you explore. It rewards exploration, provides fresh mechanics and adds some replay value.
