Just bought The Incident, going to listen it fully tomorrow :v:
Don't expect to love it at first. I certainly didn't, and like I've said in this thread, it took hearing it live and seeing how well constructed it is for live performance changed my mind. So give it some time, it's a grower :)

I liked it about half way into it...Then it just kinda went down hill for me.
Porcupine Tree are Legendary.
This band is such a big influence to me and my tastes and the music I write. I've been listening to them obsessively for about one and a half years now. Haven't really listened to much else, which is narrow-minded but whatever. Actually I was going to make this thread but in the end, I didn't bother, so creds to OP and I love you very much.
I'm not too sold on the Incident for the most part, but the second disc was brilliant, Black Dahlia especially. Time Flies is an amazing song too. But In Absentia and Deadwing are the albums I consider to be their peak. I hope things pick up from the Incident, I don't like the whole darker, more metal aspect that's going on - I like metal in general, but I reckon it's detracting from the music, now.
Also, Lasse Hoile, the guy who makes the music videos, is a fucking genius.
Anyway, Steven Wilson has like a billion side projects, which are really good. You guys should check them out.
Check it out:

Steve Wilson's solo album, Insurgentes. Gas masks.
Insurgentes is brilliant, I bought it on release. Very conceptual, also technically brilliant.
Song - Insurgentes. One of the more normal songs on the album.

He also does cover albums which you can buy on the website which are pretty cool.
Blackfield

Band he started with Israeli dude Aviv Geffen. Often described as Art Rock, its a bit different to Porcupine Tree, its also very nice.
Single by Blackfield - Hello.

Anyway that's always a lot of fun for Porcupine Tree listeners. Sounds pretty similar.
I notice Lightbulb Sun and Signify don't get half as much recognition as they should. I wonder why.
Harmony Korrine is the best song from "Insurgentes". Well my favorite anyways.

Harmony Korine was brilliant. The other's were pretty damn good too, but a bit hard to get into.
He also made a documentary on Insurgentes which was just his opinion on the music industry, it was pretty well thought-out and intelligent though
So seeing as I stopped listening a lot to Porcupine Tree, I haven't even thought about buying the new album. I know one pretty hardcore PT fan, and he was genuinly disappointed when he listened to it, which just put me off from buying it - without giving it a chance.
I was wondering if anyone could give me like a small review of some sort, and post some of the songs worth listening to on the album?
The Incident is really worth getting in my opinion. I can't really review music but it's a quality Porcupine Tree album.
Seems like most of the songs on the album have been removed from youtube though.

I agree, it's quite similar to Insurgentes in that it's very much NOT a one listen album. There are so many nuances and so many things which, to be honest, make it quite a difficult listen. It's different from other albums, but to me it's fantastic, and definitely worth the effort required.
I enjoyed The Incident, not their best but far from their worst.
Really wish I could go to the Royal Albert Hall gig, but it's really overpriced in my opinion... And none of friends really like the bands.
Kind of annoying seeing as Opeth seat tickets were £25 and they filmed that one as well.

Well, Incident is very different because its a bit more heavy and doesn't carry as much of the soundscape aspect, which is what PT is pretty well-known for. But it succeeds as a conceptual album, ie the 55 minute song does pretty well. I would in no way say its as good as Deadwing or In Absentia though.
Best songs to listen to are, in my opinion:
- Time Flies, which was the first single and is one of their best songs, I think.
- Black Dahlia
- Kneel and Disconnect
- I Drive the Hearse
I actually think Disc 2 of the incident is absolutely amazing, its a pity it was only four songs.
Anyway, nice live performance of Trains

My Perception of Porcupine Tree changed dramatically once I realized that most of their songs copy quite a bit.
Especially the Incident, it sounded too much like Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and some others to be a coincidence.

Time Flies for one was written as a homage to Pink Floyd and everyone got antsy about it because they thought it was plagiarism, but it was written as a dedication.
But then, one of the riffs from Time Flies is pretty much exactly the same as a Dream Theatre song so yeah, I guess. But you know, its still brilliant, and a lot of it is original too
Got my copy of the Anesthetize DVD in the mail today. Fuckin' glorious.
The "title" track is worth the cost of it IMO. Well, that and Dark Matter :buddy:
I bought the tickets to a festival they were coming to, and then 1 month later they canceled. :saddowns:
Seems like they aren't coming to Finland this year.
According to his Twitter, Steven Wilson will be releasing a new solo-album, a new Blackfield album and a collaboration-album with Mikael Åkerfeldt named "Storm Corrosion" next year! Last one is said to have no metal-elements on it and be very experimental.
Sounds very promising to me.
I didn't know SW had a twitter. I knew Akerfeldt did and I knew that PT did, didn't know Steven did though. I cannot fucking wait for all 3 of those albums. Both or Blackfield's previous albums were awesome, as was Insurgentes, and Opeth are my other favourite band along with Porcupine Tree :buddy:
Some pretty mindblowing shit here, I really gotta expand my horizons...
Porcupine Tree is my favourite band right now. I cannot get enough of In Absentia and Deadwing, and well pretty much everything.
PT has helped inspire a lot of my writing, and although I try not to copy them I can't help but move my music in a similar direction, as their sound is just perfection to my ears.

Looking forward to all three...shit waiting for those is going to suck :byodood:
Indeed! Damn I want the Insurgentes movie as well.
I'd really like to get into this band. What would you guys suggest is their best, or at least, most accessible album of theirs?

In Absentia
Been listening to a bunch of their songs on youtube
This is my favourite so far:

In Absentia and Stupid Dream are good places to start.

I'm not really a fan of Fear of a Blank Planet.

A lot of people don't seem to like FOABP. I agree it's not as good as Deadwing or In Absentia, but for some reason if ever I was to pick a favourite it would be FOABP. No other album makes me feel the way it does, and no other album gives me such a powerful yet basic feeling. It's so tough to describe
