considering that it moves back a little with each pull, i'd say its built so it gets stopped three times before going all the way back.

ive been analyzing it a bit and it appears that the same hook that pulls the bands from the clip goes up just enough to allow it to slide back
when the bands are on the hook it pulls itself down so it doesnt go anywhere

there's a little notch at the very end of the gun and the tension of the bands keeps it held down in place. It looks like once the last band is fired, there's not enough tension to hold it down and it releases it from the notch and allows it to slide back?
