I wouldn't even worry about what you shoot through it. You might be tempted to baby it like I did with mine (mosin was my first gun) but after you get 2 or 3 guns you realize that the Mosin is a though motherfucker. It won't bother it if you fire surplus shit through it. Though, I'd recommend Brown Bear. Its more expensive than corrosive mil surplus but less of a hassle to clean and not as expensive as lolWinchester.
People who coddled their Mosin's always tend to confuse me. I mean, the fact that the damn thing has lasted so long is sort of a testament as to how durable it is, isn't it? I'm not saying you shouldn't do regular maintenance on it (you could kick me out of the thread for that and I'd understand), but all of these little things I see people doing seem...unnecessary?
That, and the things are dirt cheap too, if it was an expensive old gun, like a Luger, then I'd understand, but the Russian guns are all dirt cheap, and I'm sure a little more wear on them won't matter in comparison to what most of them probably went through. Also, Russki milsurp from the '70s is fine to fire, a lot of people I know with old Russian guns also use old Russian or Czech ammo because of how cheap it is. Also, they're probably wrong about the steel core on those, AFAIK steel cores were deemed "armor piercing" and banned for import and general sale in the US, they're likely only steel jacketed with a copper wash. [editline]14th September 2011[/editline] Also, the silver tip makes me think they were worried about werewolves or something back then, why bother wasting silver like that?
Yeah but I don't want the shit exploding in my face. Then again I'm shooting a 70 year old gun also, but munitions wise, would that be much of an issue? [editline]13th September 2011[/editline] Friend also advised me to wash the barrel with windex or something with ammonia in it whenever I fire corrosive-primed ammo.
After firing corrosive you want to get the salts out of the barrel. This is because of the potassium chlorate that was used in the primers at the time. After some chemistry magic this stuff forms potassium chloride, a chemical salt. Salts attract water, which equal rust if you let it sit. Anything that will dissolve a salt will get rid of it, so there's no real use for the ammonia or windex or whatever. Boiling water does the trick very well, but make sure you completely dry every spot the water's come into contact to, or else you will be no better than if you'd left the salts in there in the first place. Learned that the hard way the first time :(
So what exactly do I apply gun oil to on this AK once I field strip it?
So what exactly do I apply gun oil to on this AK once I field strip it?
Apply everywhere, only once. Its all an AK needs :v
Apply everywhere, only once. Its all an AK needs :v
Pretty much open the dust cover, apply it to the spring and the outside of everything else, right?
Pretty much open the dust cover, apply it to the spring and the outside of everything else, right?
Thats what I would do. But honestly, I have no idea. I've never even touched one before. Hopefully someone can offer insight on this subject so I will be prepared when I get mine soon.

Oil wherever two or more moving parts make contact.
30 bucks for 100 rounds of 7.62x54R for my Mosin. [editline]14th September 2011[/editline] Also 5 more days
I just use Break-Free CLP on my AK, field strip it, spray it in the internals, spray some on a rag and wipe down the exterior + mag to prevent rust.
I just use Break-Free CLP on my AK, field strip it, spray it in the internals, spray some on a rag and wipe down the exterior + mag to prevent rust.
Ah, CLP, I've been told it's some of the best, and apparently the choice of the Canadian Forces.
I saw someone with one of those itty bitty red dots on a Desert Eagle the other day

I saw a scope on a Taurus revolver recently. Why do people do that shit?
Because they like being dumb.
Scopes on a revolver isn't too bad because it helps with hunting.
Scopes on a revolver isn't too bad because it helps with hunting.
Hunting what?
It's funny how you're talking shit about scopes on pistols when you go out and buy a piss ugly AK clone.
It's not ugly.
you're right it's hideous.
Whatever, I like it, and Zastava makes damn good weapons. Chrome lined barrel, brand new gun. Who cares what you think.
Ugly stock, ugly foregrip, wiggly bollocks rail mounted on receiver cover (!!!!!??!??!?), 10-round magazines and a tactilol plastic RDS. You're right, it's your waste of money. shouldveboughtanuggetorten.png
The rail isn't wobbly at all. In fact, the dust cover is hard to get on/off it's so tight.
why didn't you get an AK without a receiver mounted rail and get one with a side mount rail instead?
Because this weapon is of excellent quality, and isn't some piece of shit WASR or Century Arms with tons of random shit making it up. This is all Zastava parts and quality.
no offence, but the only decent thing zastava ever produced or designed is the m76.
The Tokarev is shit then?
Ugly stock, ugly foregrip, wiggly bollocks rail mounted on receiver cover (!!!!!??!??!?), 10-round magazines and a tactilol plastic RDS.
Nuggets are overrated, and the stock is fucking cool.
Yeah, and I already have a nugget. Why buy another one?
Oh right Prusselusken was appointed facepunch moist nugget defender.
While I personally wouldn't buy an AK without the wooden furniture, it's Faze's gun and if he likes the gun the way he got it then whatever, it's his fucking gun, there's no need to get angry with him for buying it like that. If it was arsenal I'd have to agree though, but when it comes to clones (of pretty much any gun) I don't care so much. I just feel the arsenal originals (of whatever country) from the days of old are historic pieces and should be preserved in as close to their original state as possible. When someone makes a clone, then it's a clone, it doesn't really have that same historical merit because it was based off something else, and designed like it to be sold mostly off the original's fame (or infamy). That's why I don't really like seeing someone with synthetic or, God forbid, painted wood stocks for a Simonov SKS, but I don't care so much about the Norinco ones (except painted wood stocks, those are fucking stupid no matter the gun). As long as they have the wooden stocks for the SKS still around I don't mind so much, though, because it can be restored to its original condition. I suppose my "don't fuck with the originals" mentality mostly stems from the fact that I don't just want to be a shooter, I want to be a collector as well, and having it all original means more to a collector than making it look "cool."
While looking for pictures of painted SKS rifles, I stumbled upon this 10/22 Why
