Just ordered my AK. Promise not to talk about it until I have it in my hands, and there will be pictures. Lots.
Went to the range today.
Broke the target cables on two lanes
Got fresh brass behind my glasses, burned my eye
Blew up a $3,150 Nighthawk Custom

Good times.

It's a universal tool to disassemble the Mosin. The notch in the end is to help you in taking apart the bolt assembly, although you don't really need to use it.
Just realized I missed a page before I replied, derp.
Alright, google leads no avail on my quest, maybe FP can help.
I know already this Czech shit is attracted to a magnet, and has a steel jacket, but I want to know if it's steel cored shit.
Info on the box:
7,62 - Pi 20/54 bxn
III-54
tpbl/Fe pásk
40ks Ncdp P1 nma 19/53 0,63g
I found that something on this means Gilding Metal-Clad Steel, but I don't know if that means the jacket or the core. I also know the 40ks means 40 rounds, which is how many rounds are packed in each small paper box packed within the big wood 2280 round box, and that 19/53 is likely the year of manufacturing, 1953, though the bullet cases say 54 bxn on them. I also know bxn was the factory they were made in. I want to know if anyone here could tell me what the rest of this means, and if any of the shit I posted tells me if it's lead or steel cored.
Most likely the range will ban it if it is attracted to a magnet, regardless if it's the jacket or the core.

Know for a fact mine doesn't, and can't, it's actively used by the military as a training range.

I can see how the first two happened, but how the fuck did you manage to blow the gun up?
I can see how the first two happened, but how the fuck did you manage to blow the gun up?
What we think was, one round was a squib. Got very close to exiting the barrel, but not quite. When I was packing my stuff up, I heard him say there was a pop. The gun cycled, and loaded another round. He fired it (why, I do not know) and that round pushed the first one out. We think that because the rounds are all copper jacketed, but there is a huge lead slug a half inch from the muzzle.
This bulged the barrel and locked up the action of the gun. The shop guys think it might have blown out the lower lug, but I'm not sure myself. The slide can work a very short distance. I'm thinking the barrel, which is cracked down the center, might be bulged, and is stopping at the inner surface of the slide at the muzzle, which is preventing the barrel for sliding out the front of the slide.
But, looking at this pic;

It looks like there is no front edge edge of the slide to catch on, so the barrel might very well be blown out the bottom at the chamber.
Do you have any pictures?

No, sorry, wish I had. I'll talk to the owner and see if he can send me one or two.
Are silver-tipped bullets OK to shoot on a range? :v:
Are silver-tipped bullets OK to shoot on a range? :v:
I've heard silver-tipped usually mean also steel-cored, check with your range to see if they allow it (because apparently some don't).

Not if the range is owned or operated by werewolves.
Well, the place I went isn't really owned. People just go there to shoot.
I'm heading to a friend's cabin in PA this weekend to break in the AK that I posted the pic of a couple pages back. I'll post my review after I shoot it.
Wait, so it's actually possible to make silver bullets? I heard that if you use regular bullet molds it doesn't fit because silver and lead expand differently.
Nah, the problem is cost. We had a classtrip (gunsmith class) to a gunsmith who ran a combined machine and gunsmith shop while his wife had a silversmith in the same building. They had an apprentice who had molded a .308 bullet in silver, he did it "for lulz" basicly, but the gunsmith said that it could work, but he didn't have any guarantees for the result of it.
And if you can't use a lead-bullet mould, you can just make one for silver, it ain't that all different, just need a harder material that withstand more of the expanding if that's the issue.

You actually have a gunsmithing class? That's fucking awesome, parents around here would shit a brick if that was offered in schools, and I'm not even sure you can find someone to apprentice under for it around Toronto.
Also, I'm pretty sure the bullet isn't solidly silver, AFAIK the Russians used colour-coded tips to mean certain things, the silver tip is likely one of those markers.
Norway still has one gunsmith class in the whole country as part of preserving traditions.
The closest to Toronto that I know of, would be the Colorado School of Trades' gunsmith course, but that's in the USA.
Fancier the color tip is, the fancier the bullet is.
Still those "secret" bullets I didn't sign an NDA to not talk about haven't gotten a color code as far I know.

This round for example is:
Armor-Piercing
Incendiary
But there's the mk300 which has the same functions, but also has tracer effects.
But from what I know about american colorcoding of ammunition, if the tip is purple, it's a "boring tracer" round.
Well according to a member at the shooting forum I am a member of, this rail system won't fit my Zastava PAP AK. He said I'll also burn up the red dot sight by having it mounted to the dust cover rail???
http://www.ak47accessories.com/AIM-Sports-Aluminum-Quad-Rail-Handguard-For-AK47-a-p/aim-mk003q-.htm
He suggested getting a side mount rail system for the foregrip so the sight sits hovering overtop of the weapon. Does anyone have a suggestion of what I can get that'll fit this AK?
I told you it was a bad idea. >:(
It's a Yugo, they all use the same foregrip I'm told. I just don't know which foregrip quad rail system to get.
I didn't get a picture of it, but today we mounted a [sp]airsoft[/sp] M16 carrying handle on a Mauser during recess :v:
I didn't get a picture of it, but today we mounted a [sp]airsoft[/sp] M16 carrying handle on a Mauser during recess :v:
That's something I'd expect here in the states.
There was RAILZ on the rifle for mounting scope, but the carrying handle was made to the same specs :v:
Not an "original", it was an old HV-mauser that is now used for hunting.
We didn't let it stay on, it was just something we messed around with.
Although I will admit that I like those sights and that I'd like to try them on a bolt-rifle for hunting once. That or a Vepr, if I get my hands one that is.
Meh, but understandable, I like those sights too.

Dude, you still get recess? I stopped having recess in, like, grade 7. Lucky bastard.
Yeah, we still have recess, but it's so short we usually stay in the workshop and work. It's for other classses to get their books and move to a different classroom. But my class doesn't need to since we are always in our machineshop all except 2-3 hours a week where we have buisness theory.
