It's all a matter of practice. I can actually move my eyes and look at different parts without "losing" focus (actually it would be "whithout gaining focus" I guess).

i never used to be able to do them because people told me to do this.
the trick is to de-focus your eyes, like you're looking at something past it. eventually your eyes will automatically focus on the 3D thing.

Doing it both ways gives you a sense of depth, it's just inverted if you do it cross eyed.
The cross eyed method makes your left eye look at the part on the right and your right eye at the part on the left. They then overlap and your mind is tricked into thinking it's a real "3D" object.
The 'defocus' method is called parallel eye viewing, because as opposed to crossing the images, you look straight forward into them (left eye into left, right eye into right). Same effect happens, but the depth is inverted.
