To be fair there was that big kerfuffle over the budgeting of Broken Age (consensus seems to be that Schafer sucks at budgeting and blew way too much on stuff like tons of high-profile voice actors), I can see why he'd want to take the opportunity to go "no fuck you guys video games cost a lot to make, quit it". I don't see the smug so much as actually giving an answer other than the last line.

And this is why game developers should stop going after people personally on twitter. Enthusiast gamers, i.e. the kind of person who buys Tim Schafers games, know all about this shit, and when you go after other enthusiast gamers, you can only lose fans.
Nobody (well, barely anyone) is going to buy a Double Fine game because of this, but people sure as hell WONT buy a game because they feel personally attacked.
