We're not the only ones - most of North America follows us, as does the UK, Australia, most of Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa. Roughly speaking, Britain, former parts of the British Empire, and countries basically dominated by Anglo-American culture use a dot.
I still think this one makes more sense. A period ends a sentence, a comma merely separates components in a tidy manner. I suppose visually the comma is more prominent, but why then do we use a period for a full stop, and a comma for merely a pause? And when you write out the number, you get "one thousand, two-hundred and thirty-four", not "one thousand. two-hundred and thirty-four".
