As an American, it's so weird that people just drive across countries like that. Here, we could go to Canada or Mexico if you're close to the border, but otherwise, it's more reasonable to fly.

That's what happens when you have Schengen agreements and the free transportation of people and goods protected by the EU. There's literally 0 obstacles to crossing the border. I could just take my car and travel to France, the Netherlands or Germany or whatever and have a one-day trip to some border town and won't even have to change currency!
