it still goes when your phone is turned off im pretty sure. I did the same thing on my old ipod, except my issue is that even the reserve battery went out on my old ipod, so i turned the thing back on and it says the timer has been going for like 40 something years now.
ill try to charge mine right now and get a screen-cap of it.

Damn, my iPod is only at 6509:53, forgot why I started it, but I just remember it, look at it then forget about it for another few days.
The battery life of an iPod is not to be underestimated, it lasts about 4-5x as long as my windows phone

The stopwatch is only active when you're looking at it.
All it does is record the current date and time when you hit start.
If you close and open the app again it does a little math to update the stopwatch.
