Funfact: The Romans had completely different words for man and woman using their far more equal language, Latin: hominem = man femina = woman So I feel oppressed by people who use English, and I would much rather you use my preferred pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adnouns, adverbs and grammar. Privledge tua reprehenda, pissbaby.
I've always wondered, do we have sufficient knowledge of Latin that the most proficient can speak it orally fluently?
I've always wondered, do we have sufficient knowledge of Latin that the most proficient can speak it orally fluently?
Yes, with a caveat. The most commonly used form of Latin in the past few centuries has been Church Latin (aka Medieval Latin), used by the Catholic Church up until the 60s (and still used by the more reactionary parts and by the Vatican itself). This is different from Roman Latin the same way Modern English is different from Middle English - it evolved quite a bit for a thousand years. Speakers of Church Latin would have difficulties communicating with an ancient Roman, as the pronunciation is greatly different. Roman Latin, however, is still very well-understood. They even teach it in some schools - I learned it in an American public middle school. The focus is generally more on written rather than spoken Latin, but if you dropped me in Rome around 600AUC, I'd be able to survive, I think, and that was with just three years of schooling. Actual linguists, particularly those with a specialization in ancient European languages, would fare much better.
You could in theory learn to speak it fluently, it's just difficult because very few people speak it fluently, and it's by hearing people speak a language that it is easiest to learn how to speak it. Also grammar's all fucked compared to most romanic languages, it follows a Nominitive - Accusative - Verb structure. So the sentance "Let's go to the shops!" would be "Let's the shops go to!". This is also seen as a 'classical' way of speaking Italian, and is something the Sicilian Mafia is stereotyped as doing in the same way Pirates are stereotyped as talking all "YARR ME HEARTIES". Which led to comedy gold for Italians when The Empire Strikes Back came out, because Yoda effectively talks like a Sicilian crime boss.
Subject-Object-Verb is actually quite common - Subject-Verb-Object is actually slightly *less* common than Subject-Object-Verb.

this is actually funny when you think about it [editline]7th November 2014[/editline] couple of people discussing about latin in a thread dedicated to funny stuff
Actually, in really old english, men were "wemen" and women were still women. Over time it got simplified, but I've always thought that was cool.
Nah, "wemen" is how Russians say "women".
Subject-Object-Verb is actually quite common - Subject-Verb-Object is actually slightly *less* common than Subject-Object-Verb.
My teacher taught us that theoretically, the sentence structure can be pretty much anything just as long as you have all your cases and shit right, its just that the Subject-Object-Verb structure is used to not make it a lot easier.
10k a month seems like an outrageous amount of money monthly, even if that's gross wage that's still like 6-7k (im not 100% familiar with us income tax) a month which is a ridiculous sum if you know average working wage is like 2kish especially considering this doesn't even factor in future revenue from selling the game edit: i did a quick google and some calculations, and the living wages in sf for one adult and one child is 4.6k, with income tax for the highest backet (40%) this mean he would only have to pay his employes 6.8k a month meaning tim schafer isn't very good at handling money
I am not involved in the games industry anymore, but I went through a game-oriented programming major (working for several companies as internships) and a bunch of my close friends are now programmers, artists, and designers in the SF area. That $10k/dev/mo figure is actually the standard in the industry and is commonly used in back-of-the-napkin calculations. Per developer it comes to $120k/yr. Of that, $60-80k is salary for the employee. That's a lot of money, but in the San Francisco area that's standard wages for a corporate programmer because the cost of living is absolutely obscene. But there's a lot more going on than that, because there are additional costs. Equipment, licensing fees, administrative costs, renting someplace to work, travel, PR, and taxes (oh fuck are there taxes) add up to a staggering additional amount. Do any research into corporate culture and you'll find that the wages paid to an employee are not even close to what it actually costs the company to hire and retain an employee. This is why everyone says you should negotiate your salary- for a company that already has to invest $20-30k just to hire someone, plus the operating costs to retain that employee, another $5k of salary is relatively insignificant. Anyways, Tim Schafer is a bit of a prick and not delivering a game with $3.3 mil is inexcusable, but those figures he quotes are actually valid. The key is that those are quotes for producing a full game, and his team failed at that.

Could anybody post those pictures in which fictional characters were real people and normal people were fictional? And it showed anime characters buying normal human figurines, videogame characters playing games with normal people, etc. I would appreciate it.
