[QUOTE=Fosax;46483026]What? Until apng is widely supported, there's no way gif is in any way outdated That's why the comparison is ridiculous, videos and images have different purposes, animated or not. This is in fact the same reason why it's annoying when people post a short, small and soundless webm when they could just post a gif, because at this point the only difference would be file size It's just as ridiculous as posting large gifs that are over 40 seconds between loops, that's when it is best to post a webm(aka a video), because they have different purposes.[/QUOTE] webP is meant to supersede APNG/GIF (and even PNG). WebM is for video and complex animations. APNG dropped off everyone's radar a long time ago [editline]13th November 2014[/editline] i dunno why you're disagreeing, because it's just a wholesome fact. [quote=Wikipedia]On November 18, 2011 Google began to experiment with lossless compression and support for transparency (alpha channel) in both lossless and lossy modes; support has been enabled by default in libwebp 0.2.0 (August 16, 2012).[12][13] According to Google's measurements, a conversion from PNG to WebP results in a 45% reduction in file size when starting with PNGs found on the web, and a 28% reduction compared to PNGs that are recompressed with pngcrush and pngout.[14] Google has proposed using WebP for animated images as an alternative to the popular GIF format, citing the advantages of 24-bit color with transparency, combining frames with lossy and lossless compression in the same animation, and as well as support for seeking to specific frames.[15] Google reports a 64% reduction in file size for images converted from animated GIFs to lossy WebP, and a 19% reduction when converted to lossless WebP.[/quote] almost all browsers support WebP, and any browser with WebM can display WebP with the exact same benefits with a serverside shim.

There has been a patch that includes it in Firefox since 2012 but the higher-ups at Mozilla won't accept it, IE won't implement it before firefox does, its unlikely its still going to happen. Just use HTML5 videos, it does everything(and more) GIF does and better.
[QUOTE=Cold;46483115]There is no support for WebP in anything but a select few Webkit browsers.[/QUOTE] Chrome, Safari, Opera. Facebook uses WebP for storage of any image you upload last time i checked and serve JPEG if your browser can't support it Chrome is anything but a select browser. GIF is an old format with bad habits, superseding it will happen eventually regardless of how slow google are pushing whichever format they choose to next (because you can damn well assure that nobody else has the power to do so) and HTML5 video is designed for a completely different usage case than animated GIF or WebP. as persistent as you are on thinking webp is basically nothing right now, a lot of companies are shifting it out. Netflix, facebook and google use it for a lot of their services to reduce storage usage

At least 1/4 of the time WebM freezes up on me and I have to reload the page.
[QUOTE=Mort Stroodle;46483139]At least 1/4 of the time WebM freezes up on me and I have to reload the page.[/QUOTE] Other times they don't let you replay or click along the time bar
[QUOTE=paul simon;46482623]GIF is used for showing animations and videos. Webm is used for showing animations and videos, but does it [B]better[/B] and can still be embedded similiarly.[/QUOTE] GIF's work the first time, everytime for me. Can't say that at all about webm. Really no comparison though. One has sound and the other doesn't. [QUOTE=proch;46483049]Webms can easily take over all the roles gifs ever had, and be better in every way at them. Simple as that.[/QUOTE] They would have to start being reliable to replace a 20+ year old standard.

Just because someone decided to make a 30 second clip into a gif when video tags are supported on Facepunch.
[QUOTE=tirpider;46483229] They would have to start being reliable to replace a 20+ year old standard.[/QUOTE] Shit, almost forgot just how incredibly outdated gifs are.
WebM is [I]not[/I] meant to replace GIF. sites like 4chan and BBcode forums don't support it to replace gifs either. a lot of people feel the need to say that WebM is way better for short videos than GIF. of course it is. GIF was not designed for those; for the purpose GIF was actually designed for it does quite well considering it's an old, old standard
[QUOTE=tirpider;46483229]Really no comparison though. One has sound and the other doesn't.[/QUOTE] And better quality AND smaller filesize.

[QUOTE=LittleBabyman;46483263]And better quality AND smaller filesize.[/QUOTE] And and one works reliably while the other is a temperamental child that hasn't figured out what it wants to be when(if) it becomes mature and stable.

lol I just said it's not really right to compare webm and gif because they're two completely different things meant for completely different purposes, and that webm isn't meant to replace gif to begin with and then I get called an idiot and told exactly what I said in the first place, you people are awesome, A+
