Advancing the simulation backwards is not so. At any given point, there are a ridiculously huge number of potential previous steps that could've led to the current state. (The number of potential previous states is not infinite, because the space of states itself is finite, but the number is still absurdly high).
There are time-reversible physical processes but they do not include inelastic collisions like those falling blocks. In general, entropy will always increase, which fundamentally means the irreversible loss of information.

That isn't the problem if the simulator is deterministic. The problem is that you need to set up the initial "state" to start reversing from, with all the right velocity vectors to return back to the ordered state, which requires you to simulate forward from the ordered state anyway, otherwise you'd have to be a magician and just happen to know how to fling back a pile of blocks into two neatly stacked ones.
