Not really a picture, but a story: the many hilariously tragic unmanned Soviet missions to Venus.

Basically: the few ships that did make it out of earth's orbit and actually got to Venus were few and far between, with problems in every possible stage.
However, the craft that did make it to Venus had terrible luck.
• One of them had their communications system fail in the atmosphere.
• The next one had a stronger communications array and managed to collect some data on the atmosphere and send it back, but was quickly crushed due to the pressure before it could do much else.
• The next one had more instruments, but was again crushed.
• The next one had a high-tech chassis to withstand the pressure, and actually landed, but the parachute failed and it smacked into the surface. It did manage to send a weak signal, that the temperate was 475 degrees C.
• The next one landed properly and transmitted data for 55 minutes but was destroyed by winds, heat and harsh surface conditions.
• The next one had an even harder shell actually took a black and white photograph, the world's first photo from the surface of another planet!

It was supposed to take a 360 panorama, but only managed 180, due to camera failure. The lens cap didn't come off.
• The next one had the same problem, the lens cap was melting onto the cameras.
• Venera-14 is my favourite. They built a special lens cap that would be forcefully ejected off the camera to make sure it would take a picture. It worked!
Now that a good picture had finally been taken, Venera-14 started to sample the planet's surface. You can see the ejected lens cap and sensor arm in the photo below. The scientists were shocked to find that the surface had the exact same properties as plastic! But... what had actually happened was that the arm, instead of hitting the surface, sampled instead the lens cap.
