Except, you'd have to hit it right on the energy part. A Lightsaber's blade can still cut through the hilt. Making those things pretty useless.

Well they could still be pretty useful. How many times in Jedi duels do the opponents lock blades and stand really close to each other before breaking and going back to fighting? A lot. Those little mini blades could be used to push into an opponent from a parry or something like that. They're still kinda silly though.
I'm pretty sure the intent is parrying and locking blades. The hilt being too far out is just semantics, as far as movie magic is concerned.

As far as we have seen, lightsabers don't slide on each other, meaning that those would be rather useful to lock the blade.
