probably fell or sunk under when he landed on the water and it became too cold for him, so he went into shock and the water froze around him

If the water's somewhat in motion, chances are it's not completely frozen near the shore.
My best guess is that the duck was swimming there, tried diving for food and got lost underneath the ice.
Anyways, it warmths my heart seeing someone rescuing it instead of not bothering and moving on with his own business.

Most ducks can dive for food at the bottom of lakes and rivers, so it just failed to come back up to a open hole.
Seems pretty irresponsible to jump into freezing cold water to save a wild duck. Like, good on him for managing it but holy shit unless there were EMTs hanging around that just seems like a terrible idea.

You underestimate the power of Norwegians. However, the Swedish are monumentally better and could have saved 500 ducks in the time it took this Norwegian to save one.
