Well, outside of the big leagues, soccer is actually a fun sport with an easy setup and takes no time for newcomers.
But yeah, if your refs give penalties for that kind of thing, find different refs, or play elsewhere.

I seriously doubt a professional soccer player would waste time lying on the ground and clutching his face. It's more important to be helping your team than doing that, no matter your sport.
Either he did it through habit, or he did it for a penalty.

What I guess happened:
Later in the game, you go back to that area, but the bridge is gone. Instead, you have to float across using an item. Normally, you have to go up and around to get higher so you can make it. My guess is that his muscle memory told him that he was at [I]that[/I] part of the game, so he did what would be a short-cut to get height to jump off.
