That's a rogue wave, or a large wave that hits a ship during a storm as the ship descends from a climb on another wave (though rogue wave can mean just tidal waves and large waves in general). Colliding with a rogue wave head on was actually a common method of dealing with them, and still is. Imagine being on an old wooden ship and seeing one of those bastards hurtling towards you.
