Just a week ago a friend bought a AMD and the drivers completely fucked up in every way, after installing the video card drivers the screen just went black and didn't got through the BIOS. After a complete reinstall of Windows + installing a 2 month older version of the driver it seemed to work half since the resolution won't go up to 1080p.
I think we messed 4 hours with the drivers just so the thing would work..

Whenever AMD releases a new graphics chip (not just a new variant, a new arch like the VLIW->GCN transition), it tends to have really poor driver support for a while after launch. And compared to the raw compute power of the cards, they're a lot slower than they "should" be compared to Nvidia, which usually gets blamed on worse drivers as well.
Their Linux drivers are also crap, but really everyone's Linux drivers are crap in some way or another.
I honestly have no issues with AMD drivers. Maybe it's just my luck.

Might be because the card was pretty recent (4-5 months old i think) and at launch the drivers are usually terrible
