Reminds me of my school. Once after a fight a dude was pretty messed up, and then he went to class. The teacher asked what happened, and he said he'd accidentally ran into a door. Ten times.
The teacher just laughed and continued the class since it was basically business as usual in my school :v:

It's not so unfathomable if you think about it, though.
To begin with, oxygen itself is a drug.
Oxygen is one of the most widely used therapeutic agents. It is a drug in the true sense of the word, with specific biochemical and physiologic actions, a distinct range of effective doses, and well-defined adverse effects at high doses.
It's the component of air that is the very reason for breathing at all. Nitrogen, the most abundant component of air, also has druglike properties - an adequate dose of nitrogen allegedly bears similarities to that of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas. Would your consciousness be different if the atmosphere was 78% argon gas instead of nitrogen? Maybe, maybe not, but it's an interesting hypothesis to think about, and you could test it with the right equipment and precautionary measures, but I digress.
Now, it's important to understand that humans naturally synthesize important compounds that have a lot to do with our moods, regulation of our emotions, and so on. These are derived from amino acids, an essential part of our diet. The body will convert these into a multitude of compounds including serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine. These bear strong structural similarities to a variety of drugs. For example:
Dopamine:
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6c/Dopamine2.svg/136px-Dopamine2.svg.png[/t]
Mescaline: (Found in peyote and other cacti.)
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5a/Mescaline_Structural_Formula.svg/220px-Mescaline_Structural_Formula.svg.png[/t]

Serotonin:
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c4/Serotonin-2D-skeletal.svg/304px-Serotonin-2D-skeletal.svg.png[/t]
Melatonin:
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/db/Melatonin.png/220px-Melatonin.png[/t]
Psilocybin, followed by Psilocin: (Together found in many psilocybe or magic mushrooms.
Your body also converts some psilocybin to psilocin after ingesting it)
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a5/Psilocybn.svg/200px-Psilocybn.svg.png[/t][t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/92/Psilocin.svg/220px-Psilocin.svg.png[/t]
Dimethyltryptamine (DMT): (Found in a variety of different organisms.)
[t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/88/DMT.svg/236px-DMT.svg.png[/t]
Our brains are capable of processing these drugs because they bear structural similarities to hormones that our bodies are always making and using. They end up going to the same neural pathways that those hormones go to, which in turn upsets the natural equilibrium of hormones in your brain. It's the combination of these things that produces the altered state. I've always wondered this myself, and this is purely hypothetical, but what if in some alternate universe human bodies were biosynthesizing mescaline or psilocybin instead of serotonin and dopamine? Would serotonin and dopamine instead be found in plants and be considered hallucinogenic? Fun to think about.
