I think Halo commonly used the left control stick for crouch. I've also always associated the right stick with zooming, not melee.

my index finger goes on C and then my middle finger takes over on D and third finger on W, if I have to go left my ring finger just goes back on A and my middle goes back on W if need be
sounds pretty complicated compared to moving your pinky down to ctrl but it's just what feels more comfortable for me I guess

If games let me do it I use ctrl as crouch and c as toggle crouch (like both of them).
Otherwise I just use ctrl.

How so? My thumb rests naturally over the Spacebar and C so I can quickly press those 2 keys when needed.
