When you focus on the cross (or anywhere else), the purple dots are only in your peripheral vision, which means your brain just guesses most of the details. In this case, it overcompensates for the change in colour, and goes to the opposite of fuchsia - mint green.

Not at all, let me add to this with some colour theory. Our eyes have colour correction, it's why if you wear orange ski glasses everything has a normal shade after a while and when you remove them everything is way bluer. Look at a white wall after all of the pink dots dissapear, notice how you can see a ring of green dots? Well, when you look back at the cross they overlap the pink dots and turn into the same shade of gray as the gray background. It's an auto correctional mechanism in your eyes, the green is actually your eyes compensating for that pink. It because that shade is its [I]complementary pair[/I], which means it is on the exact opposite of the colour wheel, when two complementary pair colours are mixed together, they become grey. That is how your eyes correct such light imbalances, by adding its opposite and normalizing the "image". Add the rotational effect (meaning that the green will slowly be added in front of all of the dots), the fact that that background is also gray and [B][I]boom[/I][/B] optical illusion.

Grew up in South Dakota but my parents are from the St. Louis area, so I use soda and pop interchangeably.
I still don't understand why southerners use the name for a specific brand of cola as a catch-all slang for carbonated drinks.
