I can confirm, I lived in Michigan all my life and I go to college in Florida now and I have never heard the term "Soda" as long as I lived but people kept making fun of me for saying "pop" so now I say Soda.

I actually haven't heard Texans call regular soda coke, but I have family in Alabama and that's what they use.
However, for some reason I've heard a lot of Texans call salsa 'hot sauce.'

I lived in the green part of Arkansas for 7 years and no one fucking calls it 'coke' unless they actually mean coca cola or one of the generic brown colas meant to replace it.

nobody here (i live in north florida) calls soda 'coke' unless they want a fuckin coke. otherwise they'll say they're having a soda, but usually describe it by brand name

The can. Also this thing of some regions not recognizing the others term is stupid. In Brazil there also is some of that, but if someone calls something they know by another name they will know.

Over here where we speak proper English like what the Queen does* we just say fizzy drink. Or "d'ye want summat to drink?". Or "just a lemon-lime for me, ta, love". And soda water actually has sodium in it.
