In the first scene, there's this piece of dialogue:
CIA: "If I pull that mask off, will you die?"
Bane: "It would be extremely painful..."

imo it wasn't badly done at all. there's obviously a double meaning there but imo it was pretty clear that it was meant to be "it would be painful for you", i only ever heard people talking about "how bad it was" after this whole thing started
