One time, he performed at the Letterman show and made some cynical references to the pain he was in. Letterman asked him if he burned the inside of his mouth and he casually said yes as he performed, probably in extreme pain as he did. Later he got asked how many cigarettes he had in his mouth and he answered that he was in too much pain to count. It sounds like a comical comment, but knowing that he felt the pain of hot embers searing the inside of mouth and seeing the sweat build up on his face makes this a very dark performance.
I also heard that he had to stop because insurance wouldn't cover his injuries anymore because his throat looked like he had been sucking on an exhaust pipe
