Did you use the actual textures for the grav gun? looks like it. Anywya, the grav gun looks VERY realistic, because it is basically a carbon copy, great job! In fact, when I first looked at it, I thought you had composited the grav gun from the game onto your picture. :v:
I think we both took the same approach and modified the model created by Chamoo232 (seen below). The modifications (aside from turning it orange) mainly consisted of changing it's size. The one you see below (which you get from chamoo's template) is approximately 4 inches long. Not really preferrable. We had to do some math and scale the entire thing up based on guesswork (I used the handle as a reference by measuring the template handle's length, then guessing how big the REAL handle would be compared to my hand and doing the calculations accordingly). Mine ended up being ten solid pages of 11x17 paper :v:

OH, and on the halo armor thing- I've decided to NOT do the basic master cheif helmet. Everyone does that. If I want some recognition from bungie, I'm going to have to step it up a notch and make the almighty RECON armor >:D
Holy shit. You're not stealing this thread, I'm giving it to you, take it. Your ingenuity is amazing.
BUT... i like my grav gun better :holy:
I admit, at least your gun printed right :v:
mine turned purple instead of the steel gray because the printer was being annoying and not taking my settings... and I didn't feel like printing ANOTHER 10 pages on my big paper in the hopes that it magically fixes itseslf...
also, thanks on the 'giving the thread' thing, but me and DrDarko are trying to start up a new megathread on papercraft. You're welcome to join :v:
Holy fuck REACON!!
Make flames for the head
Ok, finished the Recon last night at about 2 in the morning... Couldn't find camera batteries... still can't... I'll post it back in my own thread when I get pictures :/

you have to start small... like, REAL small. Go find a basic companion cube papercraft... then move to something cube-ISH, like tubbypaws portal papercraft.
Just dig around and find easy stuff that interests you, and move up when you feel like you can/want :)
Those are really cool, keep it up!

Yeah, starting small is the best thing to do, mostly just to familiarize yourself with papercrafting and find your stride. I remember making paper bugs out of cylinders and cones when I was like 6. That's starting SMALL.
A while ago when I was all hyped for Chromehounds I did this. (crappy 2yo cell-phone pics)

I nearly completed the sal-kar mech too but got bored with papercrafting and didn't touch it for a year.
I haven't made anything new since the grav gun but after seeing that awesome recon mask I'm starting to catch the fever again. :excited:

Well, there's just about EVERYTHING from halo here- http://halocostuming.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
Most of the helmets are to scale with my head, but the neck holes need to be cut a bit to fit right... not that anyone will complain about the underside of the helmet being correctly proportioned :ninja:
I'll be working on making the recon and the rest of the body armor into paintball-grade armor, using automotive Fiberglass Resin to not only ****** it, but also smooth it out, then use my friend and his airbrushing skill to texture it, and finish it all off with a protective clearcoat. If I feel like going all-out, I can modify paintball guns to fit inside any of the papercrafted weapons. I should make the spartan laser and put inside it a high-pressure water gun filled with red paint! :excited:

DAMMIT, it bleeped out the word... H-A-R-D-E-N. Cursed Smartness system.
Actually, I have to wonder about the jerk that got on the nerves of an admin SO MUCH that the admin had to add that word to the freaking censorship thing :raise:
Finished the recon the other day. Thought I'd post it in here since the title of my other thread is specific to the particular project I did for the thread, not lifesize papercraft :/
ANYWAYS, here's the pictures (taken with cheap dust-filled phone camera). I really wanted to use my good camera for these, but it seems that every AA battery in the house is dead or missing... :raise:

the tiny blurry black things are all numbers. each edge on the paper is given a specific edge ID number, and you have to match the edges. Kind of like how a jigsaw puzzle has specific shapes to each piece's edge... but not.

I want to make that little mouth hole on the front there have a flap that flips back when you push at it. That way we can use a straw with the helmet on :v:
sorry for the double-post, but I have new GIGANTIC pictures (and some minor updates/news), thanks to finally going to the store and getting more batteries for my nice camera...
I might as well talk a little-
I'm planning to do a tutorial on papercraft in GENERAL, and then later move onto an advanced tutorial using one of these helmets as example, complete with a time-lapse video of the entire thing over the course of the 12 to 14 hours it takes to finish. I'll probably make the video be between 7 to 10 minutes, depending on how well I can estimate the photo capture rate. Hopefully 10.

(old news in a new light)
Like I was saying earlier, the numbers printed on the edges of each 'polygon' of the papercraft's components represents the edge, and so you must match up each edge with the corresponding number. Just like every jigsaw puzzle piece has one edge that matches the color and/or cut shape of only one other piece in the whole set.
This is a close up of those numbers on the top of the in-progress rogue helmet. You can also see the superglue peeling off of my thumb to the side. It may look a little sloppy here, but once I get the layers of Fiberglass Resin set in, you won't be able to tell there were any flaws.

Here's all of the pieces for the helmet, along with the now complete face.

Man I'd like to make a mini metro cop, do you know how/where I can do that?
Just asking ? Which Program do you use to print out & design the models ?
Anyways.. Everything in this thread is :krad:
You got hairy arms.
Yar-man: I'd say if you can provide me with a model to work with, I can make you a template... if anyone's worries about Warez, just check my steam page here for proof that I, in fact, have half life 2. http://steamcommunity.com/id/daijitsu
Fan-Fanatic- I use Pepakura Designer 2, found here- http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura/
Yes, it's japanese- I think there's a link to the english site written somewhere on the page in english...
Just to let you know, the program isn't really easy to pick up, but it works great.
Crazy: we're still mammals, ya know.
How do you convert the models from hl2 into the ones that you can open with the program.. and is it possible for me to make own models in the program itself ?
Because I want to papercraft some Hl1 & CS(:S) guns
Well, the easiest way to get models into the program from HL2 is to get them to a common format, like lightwave's .LWO or 3ds max's .3ds.
You can import those (and a few other types) into the DESIGNER program, which costs money to have and be able to SAVE work. Doesn't mean you can't use it, but you'll want to keep it open for as long as you're doing your project.
Although there are some minor editing tools, you CANNOT create models within the program. Only tweak existing data.
Yeah I have Milkshape but when I want to Import the model it crashes
Edit:bought a key for designer now

If you're going to use it for paintball, shouldn't you use something more... sturdy than paper? and some kind of a mesh for the face so noone can see your face but you can see out?
Edit:
Also, E.V.A and Hayabusa? :D

mentioned it in post 99 :v:
oh, and I'm working out how to do the EVA... tougher than you'd think. Also, can't find the 3d data for hayabusa, but needless to say the head ornamentation would be painful to do :C

now that you have a key for it, does it work?
if not, what formats does milkshape allow you to export to? 3ds would be preferrable.
Hmm milkshape allows to export to a lot of formats : .obj , .3ds , .lwo .etc.
How do I avoid a lot of shapes with no flod/glue line to put them together ?

in pepakura designer, there's a tool button that looks like an exacto knife- it's called "specify open edges".simply click edges to join pieces or break them apart. I assume you already found the "Unfold" button, which does this semi-automatically for you and lays it all out on the paper layout. If you don't like the auto-unfold, click that button again (should say undo unfold) and use the tool I mentioned.
Remember to play around with the different options to see what you can do, and you should have it down to a science in no time :D
That is sincerely epic work.
could you make me a template ? I'll post the model.
For the record, yes, I can make templates from a any model... though if it's a really complicated model, don't expect an easy one to come back, it's going to be hard nomatter what.
Edit:
Sorry for your leave of absense Fanatic, I hope you get this when you come back :/
Recently I discovered how awesome papercraft is. While browsing the 405th forums (Halo armour), I wondered what else could be done, and found the gravity gun and portal gun files.
However, I want to make a life size sentry gun level one (team fortress 2), and am having problems finding software to convert it to a filetype that pepakura will recognise.
Any help here?
I would love to start doing some papercraft. I remember seeing a load of Homeworld and Homeworld 2 papercraft ships earlier last year and once even before that, they looked simply epic.
I'd kill to find some ready printable sheets, nevermind work out how to do it myself, I would make myself a whole fleet and hang it from the ceiling if I had the time. :v:
I demand papercraft teachings! :eng101:
...Please? :cow:
Or rather, I should say- perhaps some links to applications or guides that helped those who already partake in paper epic creations to get started, i'm sure we'd all appreciate it. :)
Well, the best I've come across in a while concerning how-to is this quirky little collection of videos Yamaha of all people put out with a promotional motorcycle papercraft.
DON'T LET THE SUBJECT SCARE YOU AWAY- the instructional segments of this particular site aren't strictly for the motorcycle- When you open the flash applet, it will give you the option to look at Basic Instructions, and they're very thorough with it. They even give you a Practice template to learn with.
The model, however, is a bit too advanced for a beginner (unless you learn fast or have a natural talent for this), so I suggest just using the basic instructions to learn how to papercraft, then going and finding a smaller project to play with. I might suggest finding the Ceiling Cat Papercraft by Tubbypaws.
http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/entertainment/papercraft/howto/index.html
Oh, and remember to push the big red "ENTER" button to open up the flash applet.
...
Oh, and making the sentry- if you have the model data extracted, I can do something with it for you. No, I'm not looking for warez, mods, I have the game. Check my steam profile, 'flihyte'.
You should look at some of the life sized paper craft here:

Mostly Halo suits and weapons but I read about a guy doing a Iron Man outfit it's sweet.
Bumped for program along with question
http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/
(Turns 3D files into cut outs for Paper Craft)
I was able to get the HEV Suit model from the Half-Life GCF's, decompile the mdl, import it into 3ds Max with a plug in, Export it as a usable format for the program linked above, and make the cut out sheet (Took me about 2 hours to get that all together). Unfortunately the cheap bastards didn't make the thing free, and there is no trial period, so I can't save or print it.
And the HEV Suit listed in the OP is a broken link, so does anyone know where to get one? No luck on Google so far.

I'll upload a HL1 and HL2 HEV Suit.
