Growing cotton is a labor intensive industry, and so a large, cheap work force was necessary. Without southern cotton, the northern states would have had no textile mills, no profitable industry, no industrial revolution. As for unequal rights for blacks, that's unfortunate, but hard to avoid when a lower class is suddenly declared to be equal to the upper class. The upper class will naturally attempt to restore the class difference. Not all confederates believed in slavery and not all northerners believed in abolition. I'm from the south, and I'm proud of it. There is no reason to be ashamed.
