backpack rap, correct?
Pretty much, although there's nobody quite like Kool Keith. He's kind of his own insane genre.
rap is at probably one of its best eras at the moment, with guys like wale, j cole, lupe and everyone in g.o.o.d music rising up and vets like kanye and jay z leading the way, good shit.
usually people who hate rap start out liking the early stuff because it is less diverged from the culture of rock and still has a lot of those elements in it
later hip-hop becomes its own culture even more, to the point of today where a lot of hip-hop takes in from almost every single musical genre ever
I really like the early West Coast's smoother sound. It's just sounds more pleasant ,but I do go for the southern stuff too. Reminds me what is Snoop up to now anyway?

Wow that sounds amazing. He has such a great voice for it.

west coast gangsta rap is the best
Oh would RUN-DMC's It's Tricky fall under hip hop or rap?
[editline]6th January 2011[/editline]
Wait I think it might be Rap Rock.
Oh would RUN-DMC's It's Tricky fall under hip hop or rap?
It's the same thing.
Where is Beastie Boys?
I love Paul's Boutique. Y'know Chuck D said they had better beats than anyone else in the game.
Excellent thread, TH89.
I would like to throw Astronautalis into this. He is by far my favorite rapper, yet not many people know him.
He's an "indie" rapper that would probably fall into the Art or Alternative category.

you should include a list which contains the sub genre and then some rappers, emcees and producers on that genre (and mention time) for each sub genre you mentioned. kind of repeating those who influenced lots of genres.

hip-hop is the genre, rapping is what you do over it

Holy shit, this is awesome.

rap has become synonymous with hip-hop that has rapping on it because when you say hip-hop it's not certain whether it's instrumental or not
TH89 (or anybody for that matter), could you post some more West Coast golden age rap? I really like that style and would like to hear some more for inspiration for beat production.

I've always associated them with each other and I see why now.

These 2 albums are musts for that stuff.
If you like underground rap, look up Diabolic, he's done some shit with Immortal Technique, if you can find some way to get his album Liar & a Theif, it's fucking fantastic.

Has a great interlude
"Drank all my fucking alcohol, got the fucking dog drunk"
Thanks TH89, you've greatly expanded my taste in rap. I've been a huge fan of Celph Titled and some other rappers for a while, but this has added so many new groups to my taste.
Where's the basis of rap coming from funk? :colbert:
The only thing close to any of that that I listen to is The Beastie Boys. God I'm so fucking white.
Loving this thread except I'm kind of not sure about the
Art Rap /Hipster Rap Section
Kanye West? Most certianly. He's bringing rap into a new light with heavy emotional expression emphasized in his more epic 'all or nothing' kind of beats. The more abstract feel is definitely there and I think his new able is a prime example.
The other rappers you listed like the Young Money crew? I don't think so. I think theyre definitely a part of a new movement of rap and style but I don't think its anywhere close to artistic. Does this mean I'm sayings bad? No its genius in its own way. But I wouldn't call it Art Rap. Plus I don't see where you got the hipster elements in the beats Minaj , Drake, and Wayne are pushing. Definitely some hard stuff that's raw but maintains simplicity but I didn't see anything hipster anywhere.
If anyone is bringing some form of artistic value or hipster cross elements its Theophilus London and N*E*R*D
