I'm debating what to spend my money on, a new guitar or some sampling tech/midi keyboard.
If you're getting into beat making, get a midi keyboard for sure. I don't know how many people can actually just make a beat from straight samples, but that takes time to learn.
Get a keyboard and learn a lot about the actual process itself and maybe get a drumpad to help learn sampling at the same time.
since you seem slightly educated on the matter, could you recommend a good starting out midi keyboard/drumpads? I know for usb/midi controllers Akai are pretty popular, but I'm not so hot on the keyboard side.
I'm not questioning that but can I ask how you know this?
Not it being unsuccessful at the time. Just how Furious Five didn't want to record it and how they thought it was corny.
I can't remember. I read it in a book somewhere. I think it was Can't Stop Won't Stop by Jeff Chang.

I purchased myself an Akai MPD18 and M-Audio Oxygen 25.
Though for you, I would recommended a M-Audio Keyrig 49. Less features but more keys, and since you don't have as much experience on a keyboard (I am guessing), it would benefit you to learn now.
Though I really don't know that much, I am just getting into production now, I am just sharing the knowledge I gained with you. Also buy from Amazon, they have stuff for cheaper.. usually. If you're looking for a warranty though, go through musiciansfriend cause they have good warranties and have great customer service.
pff real men do start and stop beats with cassettes

Thanks for the help, I have some experience in Piano and I used to play keyboard, but I gave up after about level 1 because my teacher was a shitdick. I've been drumming ever since, that's actually why I'm interested in making beats and the like.
though you don't really need a keyboard i must say
if you use a good DAW you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish without it
well considering the slow flow of cash recently, I'll probably be forced to purchase one side of the setup, and then get the other later. I'll probably get the MPD first, and work with a DAW, and then get the keyboard when I get some more beans

Just get to be friendly with piano roll and you'll be fine. Hell, pick up a cheap $20 toy keyboard somewhere. Even if you can't hook it up, you can still play your melodies on it and then put them in manually via piano roll.
I only really listen to Hip Hop if it samples.

Up-to-the-date, I just found my Yamaha PSR 170 keyboard in the cupboard, I used to practice piano on it and I thought we'd sold it. It has Midi functions so I guess that could work.

Sorry if this has been posted before. Normally I hate Chris Brown, but Diplo and Afrojack did a damn good job on production here. And Busta's verse is unreal.

That should be just fine. :)
bangin'
lol, fucking Busta Rhymes. That dude is from another planet.
I've gotta say, deep down, I really do like Rap and Hip Hop. My parents grew up from the 70's on, and were teenagers in the 80's, so they used to play a LOT of Run DMC, and a lot of 80's Hip Hop, which really got me into Rap. Though I can't stand modern rap. Still love Run DMC, and a few other big names from the 80s/90s era to this day.
I've just realised my electric drumkit has MIDI in and out as well, I guess that could definitely come in handy.

Partially this. I like it when hip hop builds on previous genre's like jazz of course and soul as well. Madlib is the definition of 'sample' his collection is shit endless and every time he drops something its 10000 degrees.
Just found this the other day actually. French Jazz? Hell-motherfucking-yes.

Anyone know any Rap Rock though? Despite my crazy ass library/knowledge of music I have yet to find a strong basis on Rap Rock type stuff other than RATM which somewhat counts and is more of alternative rock than anything else.

Nu Metal lol.
But in seriousness, the best (and only one I can think of) is another project of Zack De la Rocha called One Day as a Lion. It is like RATM, but a bit less rock and more rap. It's just keyboard and drums, but the keyboard has a really distorted synth. It's pretty awesome.

Plucking daisies is one of my favourite songs.
