In the PS2/Xbox game Scarface, you had a guy you could call who would bring you your personal vehicles so you could get around the open sandbox with a bit more ease and less illegal activity. A mechanic GTA only introduced in GTA V.
There was a thread like this before, so i'll ask again.
In Mafia 3, even though the gameplay and visuals looked bad, the game had one of the most well acted and beautiful cutscenes in video game history (and the lip sync is amazing) its literally oscar tier.
I know most of the game had repetitive missions with boring Assassin's creed 1-like cutscenes when talking to characters, but you can't deny the beauty of the main storyline cutscenes (especially the new ones in the new DLC with Roxy and MJ)
Also the soundtrack is god tier 😛
Not to mention that it had rain shaders. I can't find a good video, but Homefront did the same thing

Such a nice little detail and it's a shame it had so many release problems on the PC and that the gameplay got repetitive.
oh shit this thread about to die
Anyways, the saboteur was a pretty mediocre game in terms of gameplay (pretty wonky at some times and silly) but the map and the atmosphere was superb. Paris was a great settings and the developers really nailed the look and feel, especially the rooftops and the countryside.
Also the liberated areas feature where liberated areas of the map would have color while the ones with heavy nazi presence were black and white (also the rain shader was pretty cool)

Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War
traditional RTS style game but you could take control of a hero unit in third person mode, you could enter your buildings and board ships etc.
The kohan game series wasn't amazing by any stretch, but they had a lot of amazing qualities too them.
They had some of the coolest squad mechanics of any RTS game I have ever seen. Instead of recruiting individual units, you'd recruit companies. You'd have frontline units, 2 optional flanks, and 1 or 2 optional supports. Units on the flank and support slots could confer special bonuses to the company. For example, adding a ranger to the support would greatly increase the vision of the company, and provide a static buff that allowed the company to travel over terrain without suffering movement penalties. Engineers on the flank would rapidly accelerate entrenchment rates while the company was not moving which conferred substantial defensive advantages.
Also Jeremy Soule. That's always a substantial plus.
Supreme Commander 2 had a ton of options and variables you could place on a game which would lead to some really great and funny Multiplayer battles. Air units only? Air units only! No Nukes? No Nukes!
Ever since experiencing this I struggle to enjoy other RTS's the same way. I love having that degree of control over the kind of game that I want to play. There are so many RTS's out there that would benefit from this and make them amazing.
Play Forged Alliance. IIRC it has the same level of customization, but also has bigger maps, and a higher unit cap. It's definitely the better game in my opinion.
SupCom 2 was optimized for consoles I think, so it has smaller maps and a lower unit cap.
Mirror's Edge had an excellent art style and really awesome core parkour mechanics that were let down by nearly every other part of the game. The soundtrack was excellent too. It's a shame that the plot, combat, and writing were all terrible.
Shadow the hedgehog because you can kill sonic
not necessarily a bad game but Runescape is one of the few MMO worlds to not feeling boring and empty. They let you right click examine nearly all objects, making the entire world interactable with helpful tips, normal descriptions, or humourous quips. Yet to see another MMO copy this idea - they should, it's a relatively low-effort way to make the world feel more lively.
I always thought Red Faction:Guerilla's story was kinda cheesy, but the GeoMod destruction system is still a winner. I still boot up the game every now and then just to smash shit.
There's also, of course, the first Red Faction game with its terrain deformation, and the ability to tunnel through map geometry. Have yet to beat that one, though.

I don't disagree with you, but the thread title said "Great features in bad/mediocre games." :v:
Forged Alliance however is an amazing game it is easily one of the most feature complete RTS' out there.
Pretty much half of Alone In The Dark (2008). To bad they were strapped to a half finished game. I bought the Collectors Edition for $12.50 too.
I absolutely adored the inventory system of Alone In The Dark. I loved being able to physically open my jacket to look at what I'm carrying because it made me feel more immersed. I understand that not every game can take advantage of a feature like this, but I feel that games like Resident Evil could easily make a system like this work for them. There's a few other features that were pretty cool too like being able to pick up wooden objects like chairs to light them and use them as torches/weapons.
I really wanted to like it but Alone In The Dark was one of the worst games I've ever played. Good ideas can't make a game work if they aren't done right.
Body Harvest has this absolutely fantastic open world/arcade feel to it eveb though its horribly outdated even by n64 standards.
Not really a bad game, but Red Faction's destructible environments still amaze me to this day.
They ended up being a bit of a gimmick that you'd rarely use in a few places you really needed to do so, but its still amazing to have it.
Still remember digging a really deep tunnel in the glasshouse level, and tunneling my way through the sides when I was stuck in some place, or just spending more time testing how much I could blow up before reaching an indestructible chunk of rock.

I sometimes feel like going back to it. Probably my favourite mmo ever. It was simple in a few aspects, and the combat wasn't as good as other games, as we all know, but the skill system ALONE to me gave it such longevity. It was a bit of a grind at higher levels, but everything was so endearing to me, its weird. The stupid death noises some low level enemies made bring back good memories for example.
Then there was that part where I farmed the living shit out of the coal at the mining guild because a friend of mine got his account robbed and the asshats thought it was me (1 day after he let me play on it aswell, because I'm obviously gonna steal his shit right after he lends it to me :downs:) and a guy threatened to beat me up unless I mined 3000 coal for him.
Stupid bunch of fucktards... At least I didn't end up in jail later with an ankle bracelet and a wife that beats me :v:
Driver for the PS1 is a piece of shit to try and play today but the working turn signals on vehicles if you stop and press the appropriate directional key are still pretty cool.
GTA IV gets a lot of flak nowadays, but one detail that actually made me pause and pay attention to was that the radio stations would glitch for a few seconds whenever you got a call on your cellphone, while you were driving a vehicle
Bonus points because back then I used speakers, and they really did glitch out in the exact same way whenever I got a call. When I made the connection, I was awe struck. Such a small and insignificant detail they bothered to code

R* are the kings of little details. It's part of what makes their games so good.

I would put Kojima Productions a bit higher than R*. Just a little bit higher. The detail they have put into the Metal Gear games is fucking mindblowing. And sometimes it's stuff that you can miss by just a second.
The hot-switch or whatever system from Battlefield 2: Modern Combat on the PS2 was super fucking cool during the (arguably better than new BF games) campaign.
Got shot to fuck while trying to secure the submarine base? No worries, just *zoop* and now you're a sniper way over there!

Doesn't BF1 have a hot switch thing?
Doesn't BF1 have a hot switch thing?
No, just the opening bit where you die like 5 times and the intro ends.
[editline]18th April 2017[/editline]
Also arguably is right, because BF1's campaign is fucking nice. BF3/4 suck dick, but BF1 is actually really good imo
I recently played Kane and Lynch 2 after hearing all the negativity surrounding it. I honestly really liked the style they were going for with the shaky camera, and how it censored faces when you headshotted people. The sound design was awful though, and gameplay just felt so janky. It really is a shame how that game turned out.
sniper elite was pretty mediocre when i played it but i thought the shatter cam was a pretty neat thing
even if it was literally what the entire game was built around
Painkiller has this awesome rocket launcher / minigun hybrid that makes absolutely no sense at all and its by far the greatest weapon ever.

Its a miserable game but i wish that gun was in a better game in a more prominent role.

It was a pretty fun game with lots of room for sick tricks.
Command & Conquer: Renegade's online mode was some of the best online multiplayer ever made.
It's a shame the rest of the game was pretty mediocre.
Body Harvest has this absolutely fantastic open world/arcade feel to it eveb though its horribly outdated even by n64 standards.
It's still kinda cool though as it's basically a prototype of GTA III since both were made by DMA Design/Rockstar North.
