Wow! My mind is blown that this started out with paper... I really want to try this now and I have so many questions!!! About Paper Stage: What program did you use to make the paper template? Do you use thick paper/card stock to make it stronger or just standard copy paper? Did you have to do the 3D helmet design yourself? I know nothing about 3D modeling D: Mid Stage: So if I'm understanding this you take sheets of fiberglass (where the heck do you buy that?) and use that adhesive spray and just stick it all over the inside to make it stronger, right? Then you're painting the fiberglass resin over the top part. Is that what the pink is in these photos/URL]? And the paper is now a bronwish colour; is that because of the adhesive/fiberglass on the other side? What sort of tools did you use? You mentioned sanding, was there anything else that required tools? Thanks a bunch! This came out look amazing!

The Helmet model itself is obviously taken from Tribes: Ascend, not made by the guy.

Games don't generally just leave their raw 3D files laying around do they?
What program did you use to make the paper template?
People from 405th ripped the models and unfolded it to make it papercraft friendly. The program I use to rescale and print is called Pepakura Designer 3.
Do you use thick paper/card stock to make it stronger or just standard copy paper?
I used cardstock paper. Standard copy paper would not survive the resin process as it would warp and deform the helmet. Cardstock is thick enough to keep it from deforming but it may warp sometimes. That's why I make those paper bridges in the big gaps in my helmet to prevent that.
Did you have to do the 3D helmet design yourself? I know nothing about 3D modeling D:
I wish I had the time to look into it, but nope. People from 405th were kind enough to do it for me. And the paper is now a bronwish colour; is that because of the adhesive/fiberglass on the other side?
Well I would resin the outside of the helmet to harden it. If you don't, the fiberglass process will warp it. Then I apply one layer of fiberglass inside the helmet. I cut it into many pieces and stick it in with adhesive spray like you said. I doesn't make it stronger yet, the resin is what makes the fiberglass harden. Fiberglass + Resin = One tough motherfucker. The more layers you add, the stronger it is. I usually just put 2 layers maximum. The brownish color is from the resin and the pink is Bondo bodyfiller.
What sort of tools did you use?
A lot of coarse sanding blocks and Dremel (this will be your best friend in the whole thing) Be sure to be safe when doing sanding. Wear goggles and a gas mask! I'll make a detailed tutorial when I get the time eventually. Should I make a separate thread or just keep it in here?

Then sculpt the outside with the bondo. Right? :D Also I googled bondo and apparently there's like 50trilllion kinds. What did you use?
A lot of coarse sanding blocks and Dremel (this will be your best friend in the whole thing) Be sure to be safe when doing sanding.
I'll make a detailed tutorial when I get the time eventually. Should I make a separate thread or just keep it in here?
That would be awesome :D
Make a seperate thread pls
Would you guys be interested in a livestream with me and monkey where I continue development on my helmet and you guys can ask him questions on what/where to start etc.
Greg Wasdyke: I bet some skinny asian kid made it 17 hours ago
:suicide:
What's wrong with skinny asians :(

I know this sounds weird, but wearing the helmet and playing Tribes trying to cap made me feel like I was really there. It was an awesome experience.

How do I become the Greatest?
Looks rather big or maybe I just can't see your neck. What was the scale? Also, you should put the papercraft eye piece in.

I suppose a better question would be, If you could have done anything differently or cleaner, what would you have done the first time? (Not that it looks, bad, cuz it's amazing.) Thanks!
I love making helmets I made this out of a pizza box, fiberglass and casting plaster for a school project. It won out of the entire school for best artifact :v:

Thanks!
For the papercraft? I would of used a hobby knife to cut and used pens to score the fold to be easier to...well fold. Use cardstock paper if you haven't done so already and super glue because it cures fast and strengthens in between the paper pieces. Also, I mentioned this before. Would anyone be interested to have a Tribes helmet for 250$? It would include the eyepiece and a paint job unless requested not to.
Pretty epic, nicely done :b
Thanks man. I would love to but with me going back to college and not having a garage to work in will be difficult. Plus, the people who were making the papercrafts (unfolding it) didn't start on the armor so...yeah.
Question, the papercraft files that I was able to locate have the entire model. Did you have a different file set? Or did you separate the helmet somehow from the rest of the thing? cause I haven't been able to figure out how to do that.
