On my BMW E46 Facelifted Coupe, it has what BMW calls "Bi-Xenons" which is basically a HID projector that both self levels via sensors directly on the front lower control arms which monitors pitch. Then via sensors on the steering wheel and power steering mechanism, it turns the Xenon projectors 15 degrees to the left or right. Basically to help you avoid running over Bambi the deer and what not. Also the difference between brights and normal on a Bi-Xenon headlight is that there is actually a mechanical shutter that physically covers half the projector opening that flips up when you switch on brights.
Those sound real nice. Seems like a little bump collision could cause mass butthurt with those lights though. But still better than standard cutoffs on some cars, I'd rather the Bi-Xenon.
Facelifted E46s have nice cutoffs, but they used Plastic Projector Bowls. They are prone to burning off the chrome or even melting the Bowl.
Depending on the year, that IS a major problem. The model made by ZKW are known to melt and cause headlight failures. However they were only made for a short period of time, I think a year. Once BMW switched to ones made by BOSCH/AL, it was no longer an issue. Mine, a 2005 has BOSCH/AL one and I've had zero issue.

Not a problem, the unit is "self-leveling" Every time I start the car, you can see the headlight tilt up and down when it self-levels. The sensor may get damaged, but the force required to damage them would mean you would be worrying about other things.. like a bent control arm, etc etc.
The sensors are actually rather large arms attached to the suspension components that turn a little servo sending signals to the headlight levelers. Pretty neat.

Geeze way to make me feel like a illiterate idiot. "servo" that is the word I was NOT thinking about 5am in the morning after not sleeping for a 2-3 days.
its ok bud we still <3 u
As someone who has to deal with looking at headlights 8-10 hours a shift, please dont get super bright lights.
Its more dangerous to the other drivers the more bright your lights are than you think.
