They also tried that with the M-14 and it was an absolutely terrible gun. Recoil was completely uncontrollable during full auto fire, and it couldn't carry as much ammo as a comparable intermediate caliber weapon (lookin' at you AKM). They also tried full auto with the FAL; same problem, first shot was dead on target, second shot was 30 feet over target, third shot and every shot after that was AAA fire.
