Depending on the tank, it can also give the crew more room to operate and maneuver inside the tank thus increasing performance. You can even do like the Stridsvagn 103 or StugIII and have the gun directly inside the hull rather than having a superstructure. its not like warhammer machines (or anything else from that universe) have any practicality whatsoever. They're meant to look cool and nothing else.

40k does have some practical things in it (considering the overall setting and universe) but they're 99% of the time left in the shadow of skyscraper-sized walking cathedrals if i was a skilled writer i might make an essay about how "Awesome and Impractical" dominates Warhammer
