Are there some clear advantages when compared to "normal" planes`?
What's the point of planes like these? Are there some clear advantages when compared to "normal" planes`?
Like I said in my post, they were used to tow ME321's Gigants, which were probably the largest glider of all time. The 321 would carry tanks and a metric fuck load of troops and do what gliders do best; crash land, kill half the crew, and drop troops behind enemy lines without support. They weren't very good at their job because they required the HE111Z to tow it and they didn't have the agility to do multiple passes on a potential airfield. Something like that wouldn't be fit for actual air combat.
Those planes look sad, as if they silently asked to be put out of their misery every time you glance at them.
How does it aim the main cannon behind it?
it turns around
Speaking of tanks, fictional stupidly large tanks are the best tanks. It's only a model, but this bastard was planned out and ready to be built, but lack of funds and the end of the war killed it. [t]http://www.agisn.de/assets/images/Ratte-14.jpg[/t]
I think non-fictional stupidly large tanks are even better. It's only a model, but this bastard was planned out and ready to be built, but lack of funds and the end of the war killed it. [t]http://www.agisn.de/assets/images/Ratte-14.jpg[/t]
It was actually dumped because it would consume a stupid amount of resources, take tons of man power and years to build, would require a stupidly large crew with tons of training, be massively susceptible to to air strikes and artillery strikes, require stupid amounts of fuel that Germany didn't have, and would be incapable of passing deep rivers and mountainous terrain. They didn't build it because Berlin was raped to death by the Russians, they didn't build it because it was really really really really god damn stupid. The Ratte and the Monster were insanity.
Hitler loved big impractical machines. A little OT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breitspurbahn He had plans to build an enormous 3000mm track gauge system (standard gauge commonly used today is 1435mm, widest Indian with over 1600 mm) that giant trains with coaches as big as houses would roll on at speeds reaching over 200km/h. Of course, that would not only be impossible to build with the materials and technology available to him at his time (and most likely not even today, or ever), and totally unneeded, as rail transport has almost unlimited capacity and decent delivery times even on standard gauge. [t]http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/2011-03-05-eisenbahnmuseum-nuernberg-by-RalfR-28.jpg[/t] EDIT: On the other hand, he could get an upscaled version of this tiny thing: [t]http://www.hobbyboss.com/uploads/allimg/101127/5-10112G60016170.jpg[/t]

they're only bad if you're fighting in environments so cold that no human could live there; IE Scandinavia and Hoth.

Couldn't you just destroy the rails?
Couldn't you just destroy the rails?
they're typically meant for defense of rail cars on freight transports, artillery, and triple A for aircraft.
Anybody else like armored rail cars?
Three armored trains were built in Zvolen to aid in Slovak National Uprising against Nazi government, Štefánik, Hurban and Masaryk. All of them were discarded, disarmed and left for capture in tunnels after major battles and never seen again. A replica of Hurban in Zvolen (I used to live about 500m from there):
