I don't think the tips are required on airsoft guns in Finland like they are in U.S. as far as I know.

Well with Airsoft in Europe they're not required to paint the tips orange.
I say Europe as a whole because I know for a fact that England and France have nothing on the books about having to do that and its quite safe to assume the others don't either.
the UK doesn't need orange tips but does require you to only be able to buy brightly painted guns until you have a UKARA license, in which you can then buy orange tip-less, properly coloured guns

Actually, for a T91, or any T65 derived rifle: that's accurate.

Then you need to put orange tips on them. Take a piece of orange masking tape and wrap it around the muzzle. Airsoft manufacturers are going to stupid extremes to make those toys look dangerously like real firearms. That orange tip is the only noticeable differentiation.
Here in New Jersey it's best to keep the orange tips on to avoid a visit from the county SWAT team, but some of the kids around here like shooting at cars from the woods, bunch of fuckheads the lot of them.

The police officers are pretty chill though, they know about the airsoft guns and won't dispatch with weapons drawn for when they're called, but they are always on edge when someone decides its a great idea to play in the front yard w/o an orange tip.

the tips would be completely un-needed if people weren't fucking stupid with the guns in the first place. never open carry the fucking things, always carry them (unloaded, and with a muzzle sock as well if you really want) in a secure gunbag or case, and never brandish them outside of an airsoft site unless on private property or your own home, and away from the public eye (unless, almost specifically with private property, neighbours and the police are informed beforehand)
airsoft guns looking like real guns is one of the big points of airsoft, but it also opens the way for people to abuse this fact AND bring a bad image to the game at the same time

You especially need the orange tips in the UK, unless you want the entire UK police force to descend upon you. A while back, an entire swat team was called because a paramedic mistook a TV remote for a handgun.

orange tips are not a legal requirement, since we have the UKARA license system that is supposed to regulate proper-colour airsoft guns to be sold only to license holders, everyone else gets bright green or blue or orange until they have a license
brandishing a RIF in public is a fucking stupid idea, whether you have a brightly coloured, UKARA-compliant gun or not
and if you have a UKARA license for a proper coloured gun and then decide to brandish it anyway, you deserve everything you get

And this is exactly why they shot him.
After-action knowledge of the AK being airsoft does not demerit the fact that the weapon looked real enough for officers to consider it a very real threat, which forced them to take action when he went and POINTED IT AT THEM.
You do not point weapons at police officers, period. Otherwise, you can expect to get shot, and unless your gun is literally firing water at them while painted like a candy cane before they shoot you, they are entirely justified in preventing the possibility of that gun being very real and very much capable of killing them.

What the fuck were the officers supposed to do? This was in Cali, and the airshit gun wouldn't have been AWB compliant had it been real. Since it would have already been illegal, wouldn't have been hard to deduce that it could also be a full automatic AKM.
So when some little shit doesn't drop it when he hears sirens, gets told to drop it, and then points it at you, you drop the little shit so you don't put yourself, your partner, and everyone around you at risk.

Yeah, you can in the UK, after going through a load of paperwork, and being noted down in a special register that is basically a list of "who do we raid first when a gun crime is committed in this area". If you buy a deactivated gun, you shouldn't be stupid enough to be doing anything stupid with them anyway because the cops will know exactly who has any deactivated guns and they will very quickly narrow it down.

They look realistic because those poor bastards in Japan can't own guns so they make the next best thing. Who else is going to go out and spend $5,000 on a realistic looking airsoft Barrett M82 when the real deal is $8,000-$10,000.

it's perfectly fine to take your orange tip off so long as your gun is only out when you're doing maintenance on it in your own home, when you're actually playing on the field, or when you're shipping it in a box somewhere. well, in california at least, definitely not in the east coast or the UK. the only time people get in trouble for not having tips is when their guns are clearly visible in public, not when they're being safely transported.
i removed all my orange tips for a lot of reasons. i removed them off of my M4, my two AKs, and my two pistols because they were unsightly, prevented me from using threads, and made it easier to spot me when playing at my outdoors field.
