generally there was a reason why the U.S. abandoned gas operated miniguns, we tried them on the f-4 phantom and it was unreliable as shit because the air intake only worked at certain speeds, angles, and altitudes. switching to electric isn't because we woosed out, it was because an electric motor can assure you have an even RoF which prevents jams too

GSh series being the only rotary multi-barrel design; higher fire rate and limited number of bursts however.
wtf 5.45x39 is beautiful what are you talking about nigerian child grips master race
i actually like to strap another ak to my ak and use that as a grip

In the spirit of awesome, ugly-ass Ye Olde Weaponse. Le-Mat 9-shot revolver/single-shot shotgun combo. This one is an original .42 and 20 gauge, though they came in a fair variety of calibers and gauges. [editline]5th November 2013[/editline] Oh, I'm super-stupid, you posted the carbine version right above. The carbines I've seen had a different stock and both barrels were same length, didn't know it came in other configurations.
Oh, Russian rotary designs are quite awesome, actually. Where American ones are all wusses and need an electric engine to rotate them, Russian ones are all self-powered, gas-operated beasts, from the small 7.62x54r ones right up to the 30mm GAU-8 competitors mounted on aircraft. Of particular note (of awesomeness) is the 23mm GSh-6-23. This beast had an insane rate of fire of up to 12.000 rounds per minute. Sadly, it had some issues with reliability and rounds exploding prematurely (Not going off, exploding), which destroyed two planes in-flight, so it's no longer in use. Still mounted on aircraft, but without any ammo. Still a damn impressive, if not impractical, piece of mechanical artwork.
On the topic of Russian Rotary Cannons, I need to talk about the GSh-6-30. Now, taken as an individual weapon system it is pretty impressive. A max rate of fire around 6000 rounds per minute, fires a nice 30x165 mm round, and was originally designed to be used on Russian ships as part of an anti-missile weapon (one of the earliest CIWS systems in fact). That's right, it's designed to be used on ships. So the Russians, in their infinite wisdom, decided to put it on jets. I'll let some wanker from 4chan sum up how that worked out, For frame of reference they were primarily used on MiG-27s.

Remove the lights. Genius. [editline]5th November 2013[/editline] I will, however, argue that the most insane case of 'let's put it on a plane' is the M102 of the good ol' AC-130. Mostly because it's a fuckin' crew-served howizer stuck into a plane, then pointed at the ground. Mounted inside the body, and removing the left side of the cockpit for the barrel. Anyway, that thing there wasn't ever build or tested, doesn't count quite as much. Still awesome. Worst thing about the AC-130 is that I feel like a CoDtard whenever I mention it.
That helicopter gave me an idea. Mount a bunch of those russian naval cannons onto a helicopter body, remove the blades, have it hover by the sheer power of recoil brb going to patent office

Not to say that 5.56 is some pussy round and it's the reason the U.S. haven't won a single war since Korea, but 7.62 just is objectively a hell of a lot more powerful. [editline]6th November 2013[/editline] Now, of course, there are numerous reasons why 7.62 has largely been replaced by 5.56, it is by no means an objectively better all-round round. Ammo weight is a major factor, since you can carry three tiems as much loaded 5.56 as you can 7.62 for the same weight. This gives you a larger potential for shooting a lot (unless you're German and have a G36, in which case you're shit outta luck), and it's a science fact that a single .22lr that hits is worth a hell of a lot more than a whole burst from a GAU-8 that misses.
I'm not saying F/A FALs are as controllable as 5.56 F/A rifles, I'm just saying that FALs in F/A aren't uncontrollable AA rifles like Mr. Atwater on the Military Channel likes to assert...
yeah the whole "aaa gun" is an exaggeration, but a 7.62 nato battlerifle is going to have a shit load more muzzle rise and felt recoil than just about any 5.56 nato rifle would. Theres a reason the UK had all their FALs restricted to S/A rather than F/A like the Argentinians.

Here's something curious: What looks to be a STEN receiver mounted onto a modified (broken?) AR-15 lower. Interesting, if grossly impractical.
Still better then the original STEN design
