I could totally see it too, slower movement speed and fire rate and ammo cap maybe but increased damage and a slight explosive radius? Aww yiss. Would wreck in MvM.
It also doesn't really need to be as controllable, though, since you're gonna have a hell of a lot harder time getting back up from a single 7.62 hit than 5.56. Not to say that 5.56 is some pussy round and it's the reason the U.S. haven't won a single war since Korea, but 7.62 just is objectively a hell of a lot more powerful. [editline]6th November 2013[/editline] Now, of course, there are numerous reasons why 7.62 has largely been replaced by 5.56, it is by no means an objectively better all-round round. Ammo weight is a major factor, since you can carry three tiems as much loaded 5.56 as you can 7.62 for the same weight. This gives you a larger potential for shooting a lot (unless you're German and have a G36, in which case you're shit outta luck), and it's a science fact that a single .22lr that hits is worth a hell of a lot more than a whole burst from a GAU-8 that misses.
Going with this, why hasn't anyone made a SAW that shoots .22lr at 1200rpm? Even if it won't penetrate anything, it's still gonna be a lot of lead flying your way.
Shoot many bullet at high rate. Problems are solved. Dispose money here.
You're not going to be firing many bullets at a high rate when you have jams all the fucking time. plus I don't think it's very viable to have a belt fed .22lr. Theres been rifles and even AR uppers that can have full-auto .22lr, it's just that they aren't very desireable They're cool as hell and fun to shoot but don't have any military value.

"Despite the relatively low power of the .22 LR round, testing demonstrated that automatic fire could penetrate even concrete and bulletproof vests from cumulative damage. However, the target would have to remain still for an improbable amount of time to allow the cumulative damage to amass in the same area to achieve this."
that thing in 6.5x25 CBJ would be a pain to come up against.
I was thinking 7.62x25, 5.7x28 or 4.6x30, but 6.5x25 seems superior.
Probably why I was confused, I saw the 1945 AG-42B when I looked up the Ljungman and Hakim.
It doesn't exactly help that the Hakim was basically a clone of both. And yeah the action on that thing will take your thumb off, the way it's supposed to work is you push the bolt carrier forward until it encases the bolt, at which point the two lock together until you pull it all the way back, where if the safety is disabled it strikes on a nub and springs the bolt forward again. Ow. They were also direct impingement operated, which is kind of interesting. Also, after looking at those tacticool AK's from the previous page, I'm wondering something: if any of you were to redesign the charging handle on an AK rifle, how would you make it and where would you put it?

Having the charging handle on the left side or poking out of the gas tube isn't going to give you any real advantage on an already super heavily outdated AK platform. It's kind of like giving a Ford Pento new bucket seats and hoping it performs a little more like a Ferari 599

The AK-12 has a swappable left or right side charging handle. Many modern rifles nowadays have left side charging handles. Right side charging handles are leftover from bolt-actions; since the majority of shooters were/are right handed, it made sense for the dominant hand to work the action, reload a clip (or tube, tube load is on the right side for old style lever actions.)

In other words I'm looking for form not function, I know that's not exactly all that common here, but I figured it was worth asking after those "AK-337"s got posted. Plus the idea of tacticooling an AK and leaving the charging handle alone seems really dumb, but I didn't wanna just slap it onto the other side, or bend it Galil style, at least until I've seen if there are other options. So far what I've seen for AK charging handles are the traditional ones, Galil vertical ones, a couple simple left-sided ones, the LINCH, some gas-tube mounted ones, and one Pakistani AK with an AR-15 handle. I am also however inclined to agree with MAC though, I do think that a left-side or centered charging handle does give some practical benefit over the current setup.

The operation of firearms hasn't changed much since the AK was conceived, and by that logic, everything is outdated compared to caseless ammunition weapons. Besides, all they keep doing to the M16 is adding rails and ergonomic enhancements, and woop-de-do, gas piston operation. Whats wrong with ergonomically updating the AK series?

It's outdated in the same way the M1911 is, it still works but there are designs out there that can do everything it does better.
