It's got pretty good killing power for such a small cartridge, and it's damned accurate too because of it's shorter barrel. The brass is just going to deflect off the scope assuming the brass would even hit the scope.

Our Drill Sergeants weren't overly concerned with muzzle direction unless we were on a range or someone was doing something overtly stupid. We did point our weapons at each other intentionally during training with blanks etc. Prison is a stiff punishment for poor muzzle awareness and trigger discipline; I understand that they're trying to impress upon you the severity of your actions and their consequences should you actually have rounds chambered.

Back when I was issued my ol' G3, I had the unit 'tard point his at me and say stupid shit. I grabbes his barrel and hit him in the gut with the stock. The sgt. was quite pleased.
